Convexed sabre grind?

Is there anyone here who has applied a convexed edge to a sabre-ground knife? How does that work? Do you only convex the actual adge of the knife, or is the entire blade re-ground/profiled? I would appreciate if anyone here can post pics.

I am just starting to study up on sharpening and am a bit nervous about it. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you would only convex the edge, not the main part of the blade. As a matter of fact, the original Custom ADs are saber ground on the main part of the blade, but have a factory convexed edge.

There's a difference between a full convex grind (from spine to tip) and a convex edge bevel (just the edge bevel). I imagine converting a saber grind to a full convex will involve much more material removal than the latter since you must remove the shoulders of the existing bevels.

Depends on how acute you want the edge. At some point you are moving the blade shoulder so far up the primary bevel you might as well convex the whole thing. That is what I did with my SAR5.

I think I just want a convexed edge. If I were to convex the whole knife I might as well just start with a full-flat grind, no?

Makes No difference what you start with Saber or Flat. Once you push the edge bevel up high enough by removing material from the shoulder(which is how you form the convex) you will by default be convexing the entire flat.

All depends on what you want.

I re-profile my blades to a compound edge on a bench stone because that is what I know how to do and when I touch them up later I do it with sandpaper on a mouse pad so eventually it becomes a convex edge.

IGM, maybe it would help if you told us what you see as the difference in convexing the edge of a Sabre ground knife verses a flat ground one.

The task is exactly the same, the tools are the same, the technique is the same.

Just get started and we can walk you through any problems. Its a learn by doing thing! :D

Actually, I'm sending a sabred something to BantheMan, and I was thinking of having him convex the edge because I know that's a specialty of his, but I'm trying to learn more before I say anything for sure.

Got a pic of one of those, RT?

I can still see a hint of the sabre-grind. Did you actually flatten the entire blade, or is it still sabre-ground with just a convex edge?

On most of my user blades I convex the edges. You basicly grind the first 1/8" or so of the blade edge. I will work them until I can get the edge blended into the rest of the blade. I like doing them this way for ease of sharpening. My prefered method of sharpening is either my belt grinder with a leather belt or my leather strop. I just like the feel and cutting of a nice highly polished convex edge. I have not done a full convex on any of my knives yet.
