Convexing on a Tormek?

As a rule, sharpening on a grinding wheel creates a slightly concave bevel because ... um ... wheels are round. :)

But with the release of their KJ-45 and KJ-140 jigs, Tormek has provided the ability to create controlled convex bevels. The jig has two stops, so if you want to create a convex all you have to do is, instead of moving the jig straight across the guide bar, you move it up and down between the two stops as you move across the bar.

Here's the result of my second attempt, and my first on a folding knife:

If you want to see how it works in action, the Youtube page has a link to Tormek's rep doing a demonstration.

With my older Tormek, I once experimented with twisted rubber bands on the clamp shank for convexing, found it kinda fiddly. When I wish to convex, I do it now on a slow speed belt sander.

Great if it works for you.

It's not something I'm likely to do often. If I really want to convex something I can just freehand it, because when I freehand I get a convex edge whether I want it or not. 😂

More so on a dished stone, of which I have a few. I turn my wrist when using them, but that doesn’t compensate perfectly. I don’t really mind, or even notice most times, the slight convexity.
