Having lurked on Bladeforums for quite some time I decided to convex my recon scout as my first 'tinkering' project.

I'm almost done and I'm quite proud of myself. One side looks a little scratched up but the coating it was already worn so I don't really care.

One problem I've found is that the straight section of the blade is more or less shaving sharp but not towards the belly and tip. It's definitely sharp and will cut paper no problem but won't pop paracord or shave hair.

I'm not sure how to fix up the inconsistency in the edge. Will working on one area specifically just produce more inconsistency? Or should I work consistently along the whole edge knowing that I'm just wearing down perfectly good section of the blade?

Tools at my disposal: Lansky diamond stone set (used freehand, the guides suck), 400 grit sand paper, KSF leather strop and black and green compound. Sorry no belt sander...

did you have a burr the full length of the edge? did you check for one before going to the strop? if you cant see a burr and want to check for one, run a sewing needle down from the spine to the edge and if there is a burr, it will catch. a mangafying glass would be good to use also. i would work on the belly where its dull and leave the rest of the blade alone but strop the entire blade when done.

a good test when you are done to see if the edge is sharp is to pull the blade along the top of your thumbnail while pushing outward on the blade lightly. if the blade slips off your nail out away from you, thats a good sign your edge is not sharp. you can also look straight down on the edge and see if the edge shines which is a good sign the edge is dull or has a burr or flat spot.
