How hard is it to convex and maintain it with just a regular stone? Will it be as good as a mousepad convex? I am not really satisfied with the gatco edge, i like both sides to be even and the gatco isnt doing it for me. Thanks

They say that if you sharpen it for long enough free handed it will eventually kind of convex itself anyway...

The best and easiest way is to do it using the mousepad method. But you can do it using waterstone too just like how the japanese polish their swords & knives. But it takes years of practices to get it done right. also, you have to have a selection of stones from low to high grids. with skills, you can do wonder with stones. but for me, It's just a pain.
Again, easiest way is to re-profile your edge using mousepad method. This method is much more forgiving to your blade if you screwed up. start using 400grit then 600 then increase up 1000,1200 or even 2000. Then strop it black/green compound on leather strop. to maintain the razorsharp edge, you just strop it with the leather strop. heck, it can even remove unwanted patina or rust for you.
just my opinion....

like tripton said it will kind of go convex by itself if you're not a master with keeping your angle perfect at all times.

One thing to keep in mind, edge bevels may not look perfectly even because the primary grind is off by a bit. I've seen this on many many knives, cheap and expensive. It becomes a lot more noticeable when you take the edge down to a very acute angle.

I have put convex edges on a few knives exclusively using a DMT stone. By the time I get the edge bevel down to the angle I want it at, the edge is a bit convexed because I do it freehand. Then, I use a leather strop with some compound to smooth out and polish the final bevel.

Easiest way in the whole world to get a PERFECT convexed edge on any knife without a mousepad...

Send it to Simon. (Siguy on this forum) It's worth it. After that, maintaining is easy.

I used to have piles of mousepads, but I think I threw them out a few years ago. I don't have any now. :(

Would you happen to know his rates? Im on a college budget right now and i still have to save up for my rp knives :grumpy: Hopefully I can scrounge enough money for both of my rp knives before the deadline

Siguy just indicated he is shipping off and won't be sharpening for a while. RichardJ does good stuff from what I hear.

Still, though a good way is to learn on your own. Getting your knife convexed will be fun while the edge lasts be eventually your going to want to sharpen it.
