I'm on the fence for an Umnum, s there any other folder like it that I should go for instead? Or just take the umnum. What I mean is something that can be a workhorse, and look aged as it's used

The Zaan is basically the same as the Seb 25 from the aspect of design and blade thickness. I suspect they are equally tough.
I think that the Les George VECP is a pretty good knife; it has good blade-steel (CTS-XHP, IIRC) and is a pretty strong well-designed folder. I think the blade thickness is perhaps 0.160" but not certain. It costs a little more than the Zaan or Sebbie, about $500 or so on the BF Exchange when you find one.
I've only held one, turned down the opportunity to purchase it for $450 as it was a bit large for my large hand, and the detent seemed to be too strong for me to handle easily. I've had several Zaan designs and prefer the LBS design as it allows much more access to the lock-blade for purposes of closing the blade.
I have carried a Zaan religiously for the past several yrs and think I would have a hard time leaving it for a different folder.

I do believe that the 25 has better ergos, I have not owned a Zaan before and unfortunately cannot handle one. Friends in the knife world who trust me don't seem to have a Zaan they can lend me just to fondle/carry a little to try out.

Hope you don't mind my asking this here, OP, but I was wondering if there's any difference in quality and fit and finish with the Sebenza, Umnum (Tanto as well.), Startac models?

Go to a dealer and sift through their ZT 550's until you find the not-so-rare one without QC issues and pass on the savings to me! I have handled a Zaan, and it is a pretty cool knife, but honestly it isn't super special. The handle doesn't provide great traction, and the pocket clip rides really high. The lock on it is super sweet though. If you won't look at anything cheaper, that über cool detent ball on it is almost worth it. Almost.

Most crk's look great with age. I have a 25 that is similar to a zaan and I can attest to the added toughness over a sebenza 21. I'd buy based on the type if use your going to be doing. If you beat it to hell maybe a strider with a good warranty might suit you better. But if your just doing cutting i would buy a zaan or 25. I carry an xm-18 for work and truly abuse that thing and it barely shows any wear but def is gaining it's own character. If you have the extra coin I'm sure most would agree that the xm is also a true work horse

Let me put it this way. I hate CRK knives. Some people can appreciate the subtle nuances of perfected QC, but I think it is all a bunch of whooey. That said, I hate it completely, but I am strangely in love with the Umnumzaan. If you insist on that knife, you shouldn't be upset if you can appreciate the subtle differences.

Even if you wind up hating the Zaan, the resale value of them is great. If you put a good price up, you might lose your hearing to the sonic boom from how fast it flies out the door.
