Ain't whipped up any new blades lately, took a bit of a break from it. But the anvil and the grinder call, not loud, just a persistent whisper in my ear. Time to "cook" something up. Not sure what, but here's a peek at my "recipe books". ;)

I thought you might enjoy a few old Texas recycling efforts;) . Small rifleman's knife made from a saw blade; sheath for Bowie made out of boot leather. Possibles bag from saddle skirting leather with homespun burlap shoulder strap. Glass powder flask made in Seguin; .50 cal. rifle made in San Antonio from parts shipped from the east via New Orleans.

Dadgum Berk, what a sweet looking rig. The size/shape/construction of that patch knife is pure classic, and that bowie is absolutely awesome. Make a bowie? Honestly, the urge to do so is there, but I just can't think of a practical use I'd have for the thing. More likely my "big knife project" (when I find that dadburn round2it, could'a swore I seen that thing just the other day) will be an American rifleman's knife of the 18th century. About an eight inch blade, antler handle, and a simple guard, if any.

I'd love to see a sarge dirk...

I had a knife made that was greatly influenced by the rifleman's knife on the cover of "the knife in homespun America", but have never used it.

Whatever you end up with I can't wait to see.
 
You fellers are just filling my head with all sorts of evil thoughts, i.e., make a big old pointy as hell Scottish dirk, and go stick a feral hog with it ala Dan Koster. As thrusting weapons, dirks are rather formidable, hmmmmmmm. . . . . ;)

I agree with Berkley that R.L. Wilson's books contain some of my favorite "recipes". Lots of bowies and accoutrements in 'em.

Dan, them durn hogs ain't got much chance of offering an argument with a catch dog latched onto each ear. I say we go after 'em with oversized sgian dubhs or German Jagdknickers to keep things sporting. ;)

added: I know I've mentioned it before, but for the benefit of new folks, a young friend of mine, tall, strapping, red-headed Texan, took a trophy hog with a 12" Sirupati. Khuk afficionados might consider a 12" Siru to be "dinky", but the hog did not share that opinion <grin>
 
I've got a Linder that's very similar to the one you got pictured there, Sarge. It originally came with a deer foot for a handle, but it was replaced with a piece of hickory.

My Grandfather carried it through WWII. He scoffed at most every blade the military issued and used that one faithfully, complete with a homemade scabbard. He marked all the places he travelled during his service on the sheath. He gave it to me when I was a kid. Some day I'll have to take some pics of it, and see if the markings on the scabbard could be made to show.

BTW, a Scottish dirk in any form would be awesome. It seems impossible to find any decent ones out there. I'm about to give up and just try to make my wife one for Christmas, even though the spearpoint blade is a bit daunting.

I don't think I could take the stalking, tracking, running, trapping, etc. required to take a hog mano-a-mano. Maybe I could put the GPS collar on you and when you get there...you can bark and I'll find my way. :D :p :eek:

Dirks and bowies are going to have to wait. I've been wanting a French "Boucheron" (18th century belt knife), so I made me a durn good one.
Top knife pictured is an original Boucheron that's been rehandled for a museum. Bottom is my knife, same blade size/shape, but I gave mine a very painstakingly ground gradual convex ala Opinel (cuts/slices like a freak :eek: ).
Also gave it a full tang with three pins/rivets, in contrast to the original's partial tang, two rivet handle. The museum example is handled in boxwood (very common for the period) but I opted for rosewood, because I like the darker wood's resistance to showing bloodstains, et cetera. I like the blade and handle shape, simple, but extremely functional. Dandy belt knife, and definitely what I'll be packing next time I go "longwalking" :D

Was that hog killed with the Sirupati chopped or stabbed. I,m pretty sure the answer is stabbed . I just wanted to make sure.
