As a splinter discussion from a previous thread where I mentioned Ken Warner, Knifeware.com and Blackjack knives and convex edge sharpening, I wanted to show you something I found on the site. (They also offer a line called "Big Country Knives" at the same place.)
They sell this new manufacture khuk blade, which is just 15" OAL but barely 16 oz. Warner specifically says that this is "a cutter, not a chopper". This is basically a slightly smaller remake of the old BJ Reinhardt Khuk, IMO. It's a nice little job. They sell it singly, and also in the so-called "safari package" which includes the khuk and a very nice new BJ knife called the Grunt (which can also be bought/carried singly.) He puts them both together into the same sheath, like Dan did for Danny in Japan with his AK Bowie. I'll include a couple of pictures here.
This is a nice outdoors setup, and is great for slicing and dicing, but if you need some _serious_ chopping ala HI style this won't make it. Fortunately, and what is cool, is that the sheath is excellent quality, is very reasonably priced, AND fits most of HI's 15-16.5" blades very well. The design is very well thought out and tilts the blade backwards for a very easy onehand draw. I have tried 15" sirus, a 15" BAS, a 15" Silver mounted AK, and even a 16.5" Chiruwa AK, and they all fit fine. The sheath is thick enough and solid enough that even though the HI blade spines are thicker, it accomodates them no problem.
With a larger HI blade in place, it makes sheathing the 5 1/2" Grunt in front a bit harder, but I was thinking a JKM would fit nicely, or the new hunting knife you guys are commissioning would be perfect.
I plan to keep the dual setup for the Blackjack knives, but you can also get just the khuk sheath for $32 and the Grunt sheath separate for just $19. The quality of the leather and leather work is excellent, and these are very well priced. My plan is to score at least 2 more of the standard khuk sheaths, and keep them for taking my HI knives afield. With the safari setup, I can still take both Blackjacks out, take two HI knives in the BJ rig as described above, or (as I suspect I will probably do most often), carry my Chiruwa Ak in a standalone BJ leather khuk sheath and the Grunt in it's own sheath as shown (I bought an extra standalone Grunt sheath for this option.) Either way, spending a few bucks gives you multiple carry options.
I don't mean to take anything away from Terry Sisco, but I know he is pretty busy and backlogged, and anytime I can get a brand new HD leather quickdraw sheath that fits the blades I use the most for just over $30, I pay attention!
And, of course, larger / more curvy knives like the M-43 won't fit and would still require Terry's expertise. A WWII would fit, but would be about an inch and a half too long.
If you go to Knifeware.com, they have it all there. About the only option I don't see listed is if you wanted to buy the Safari Kit double sheath just by itself, but I'm sure you could e-mail them and they would arrange something. Going by the separate prices I would guess it would sell for about $50.
Good luck, and let me know if any of this works for you, or you come up with something different.
BTW, I apologize for the picture quality. I keep my office pretty dark and didn't bother setting up extra lights for the camera. Hopefully you will get the idea. The last pic shows my 16.5" 28oz. Chiruwa AK in the Blackjack Safari double sheath.
Regards,
Norm
