I was recently contacted by someone in a near by swat team. He's a sniper in Toronto who would love to have a couple camp knives made for him and a friend. He wanted to send me a few barrels from his sniper rifles. The steel is probably no good for the edge but maybe a San mai could be made. I only do stock removal so I had to turn down the build.

If anyone in interested in this build let me know and I'll get you in touch with him.

If you don't get any takers, I might be willing to take this on...PM me if needed

Huh, just watched the Sorrels vids on that, interesting. If someone here takes it on, don’t forget pics.

I would question IF the Gun barrels Could be hardened high enough for a good blade??
second i would ask If i could replace the steel with something the same class?? (High quality gun barrels can be very expensive)
If legal to do i might want the gun barrels to build my own gun( nothing like hitting a very small target 500 plus meters away)
i think a buddy of mine would be very interested in this (if you don't find someone)

he was planning on sending my 3 barrels. He said I could use what I needed and keep the remaining metal.

If I had more experience forging, I’d be all over this. I wonder if the manufacturer would reveal anything about the steel they use? Also, when does a sniper consider a barrel wore out?

A typical steel would be 416R. It has low carbon compared to blade steel and only hardens to around 40.
Competitive accuracy is lost after around 5000 rounds for .308, and 2000 rounds for .338LM. In other words it depends on the cartridge.

They mainly wear out near the throat.

If it's only throat wear, you can cut it down and re-chamber it...
But making knives from it would be super cool!
