I picked up a second hand red micarta KR Johnson sodbuster on the sales forum here--it's a terrifically made knife. I'm working on getting the edge where I want, but I'm very impressed. It should be great to carry and use.

I am wondering about the red micarta--is there a way to oil it/keep the dark shiny red color? How should it be treated?

Don't worry, I'll try to post pictures tomorrow when it's light again.

Best,
Daniel

Congrats, Daniel! I dig the Sod Buster... simple, functional and comfortable. Looking forward to the pics!

Here we go--pictures, but just quick and dirty iPhone quality, so please forgive me. No chance for use of the real camera until this week is over. The knife is a third-hand KR Johnson sodbuster. I love the red micarta and the lanyard hole, but I need to get a proper leather lanyard. The steel is CPM 154, and seems somewhat harder than the 59-60 that's on my other knife with that steel. I don't have the edge where I want it yet--it's shaving but still a little rough. The fit is fantastic, with a terrific snap (no half-stop) and probably about a 6 on the pull. The blade has a little wear, but nothing I can't put up with--it's not like these pop up all the time and the price was right for the quality.

If you have any tips about the micarta, let me know. Otherwise this one is in my pocket for regular EDC duty.

Cheers,
Daniel

A nice looking traditional Sodbuster (aka Hippekniep in german ;) ) with a modern handle material. Really a great looking knife! And you are right, the micarta has a nice dark-red color. Congratz on that beautiful knife :)

Very elegant Sodbuster, can't imagine why anybody would want to sell it.

Red micarta looks a treat, mineral oil or furniture wax will keep the lustre.

Not long ago i got a Queen D2 Country Cousin and I have been very happy with it indeed, simple, good in the hand and effective.

Congrats on a great knife! KR Johnson's sodbusters are some nice knives and will serve you well. I'm certain Rolf is drooling all over his keyboard due to that red Micarta:D Enjoy!

Thank, y'all! I'm very impressed with the build quality on the knife, and the blade seems to be FFG too, and very sturdy. I'm getting the edge close to where I want, but will have to break out the medium Sharpmaker rods to blend the edge of the bevel a bit more to get it closer to convex.

In any case, it's a good looking little blade and very useful. Not much is going to get pocket time this week!

Cheers,
Daniel
