I was doing a search and came across this site. Only read bits but I found a really cool pocket knife. Anyone seen one of these before?

Would like to hear what you guys think of his clothing choices too. His buttons to navigate the site are in the compass. I won't say how long it took me to figure that out.

I have one that looks a lot like that. My Swedish grandpa gave it to me, and I believe it was made in Sweden. Mine has markings on the brass body that say "A.J.W. JERNBOLAGET ESKILSTUNA." , and JERNBOLAGET is stamped on the blade.

I've seen one before, that one. It's Waylands barrel knife, he's a member of BushcraftUK of which I am also a member.

Like he says on his website it's probably the safest locking folder around because the handle itself holds the blade open or closed so really there's no way it can close on you unless the handle somehow split in two. The downside of course is that it's very slow to open or close, so basically it wouldn't be so good for self defence.

It reminds me of an Opinel knife, they both lock in a similar way, with something physically blocking the blade from closing. The difference is that the Opinel is faster to open and close but the barrel knife has a stronger locking mechanism, so it's really a trade off of strength and speed.

The compass navigation on his site is a bit confusing at first but you get used to it, as for his clothing choices, they definately fit his profession.

Like he says, trust him, he's a viking. ;)

These knives were most often made in Sweden or Norway around and before 1900's. I think atleast that that's when the pattern had it's high point. You can still find knives that was made during that period, but from what i've gathered, it's difficult to find newer ones.

I was trying to buy one on ebay for a while.
You do see them but they always get bid up really high!
I wonder does anybody make new ones or reproductions?

great site. thanks for passing along.
yeah those barrels knives are intriguing.
i too, have made lame attempts on the bay to grab one.
without success so far. ...

Those came in several different sizes and from what I can gather ,were popular with the workin folk. All the ones Ive seen were just about worn out. Swedish in origin as already mentioned.--KV

Very cool . Thanks for sharing. I really like the looks of that knife. Yet another knife to put in the (one of these days, knife to get.) Man this Forum is killing me ;)

I have the identical knife. It was my dad's (he was from Norway). Mine shows more blade wear.
