Cool little trick for CS Bushman

While trying to figure out how to add a cap to the butt of this thing I tried a couple of things. First I fashioned a kydex cap, but I think it would be easy to accidentally knock off. Then I decided I might try to epoxy a threaded PVC coupling in there and use a screw cap. Well the piece that would fit offered only a very small hole, and took away the ability to use it as a spear point. Then I noticed some boat plugs I had sitting on a shelf. Nah, that would be too easy. But they fit perfectly! You can pick em up anywhere marine supplies are sold, for a few bucks. They have several styles, some screw, some have a little lever lock, like this one. All of them adjust for a very tight seal. Waterproof in fact, which is always good when dealing with keeping water out of a boat. Now I'm going to fashion a push in plug for the other end, something that could be pushed out. That'll be easy, due to the taper of the handle. Thought some of you guys wanting to add kits to the handle might like this.

haha wow i am very impressed.... sometimes the simplest things eh? haha it just takes the right person with the right piece of scrape laying around to make this kind of connection for everyone else. great stuff, thank you for the post!

the live well plugs I use to have dont possess a lip. They should work for the other end.Good tip.

nice ideat use a rubber "cap" made for a table leg / cane tip / whatever. very cheap at any hardware stor. Not waterproof but very resistant and gives a little extra bulk and grip to keep your hand from sliding down the tapered handle. I havent had any luck with the bottom so I might give the boat plug thing a try. Who did the sheath? I would put my matches inside I think but THen again I have never tried to make any kind of add on holder either.

I made it yesterday. I added a cheap matchsafe to hold PJ cottonballs and maybe some lightard sticks. I'm going to put a firesteel and other odds and ends in the knife.

It'll make a decent beater set up to throw in the boat and grab when I get out to walk around the swamp. Need to add a clipper compass to the 550 baldric rig. Still some stuff to do the knife itself.

Cool :)

I like my old bushman, first fb I bought. Saved my butt on my first winter solo, along with my fiskars saw.

Thanks for the tip :)

thanks for the lower picts. I have the smaller version so there is not much room inside. it usually resides in the CERT bag so no worries about how to carry. I like the baldric rig but usually loop mine over my shoulder not my lips (nose) .:) Cool totem.

I like it. I have a simple rubber plug in mine. That looks a bit cooler.

Great idea, just make sure you enunciate carefully...last thing you want in a wilderness campsite, is confusion over the phrase "boat plug".......:eek:
