I saw a photo of a trap made at the Pathfinder survival school and had to give it a go today~

Pathfinder had used peanut butter but I decided to use a cashew nut under the trigger stick. The way this trap is set up makes it very sensitive as you can probably imagine !

I didn't need a knife too much for this trap, just a little sharpening of the V piece and trimming up of the rest. This was my knife today~

As it was quite warm today I then took the dogs for a dip in the sea where they managed to find a buddy ( no owner to be seen !)~

Hi pitdog good post. Just hot hot was it up there? it was 93 here in east texas.

I cant tell from the pics quite how it works, could you give a bit of a tutorial? It looks like an interesting trap.

Same question
I dont see the way this one activates
I see the stick wedged between the crossbar and the ground
that somehow gets knocked out when the squirrel eats the nut,
then the cross stick falls
but what tightens the noose?

always cool pic's and lessons... thanks!

I see how it works! Finally, the rope decends from a flexed branch (assuming) down the guide pole (the one with the Y) and is attached to that stick that you see the string arround. That Stick is using the stick thats notched into the support log in the bottom as its brace. So when the support stick is tripped the stick with the rope tied too it has the loop swing around the critter. The ONLY thing that I would wonder about is the Y branch in the ground obstructing the flow of the stick with the string around it and not allowing the noose to tighten.....I have to make one now. Very clever little design and it looks real simple to make, always a plus.

Traps are a nightmare to explain but I think you have it right buddy.

Regarding the peg with the cord attached catching on the upside down Y piece you are also correct, I'd say it caught about 50% of the time when I tested it. What I will do next time and what I'd recommend anyone else do is use a goal post set up instead of the Y, it never catches that way.

This is a goal post set up I did a few days ago~

Cool pics Pit, always nice to see your post as they're always informative. As for being hot it was 97 here in South Carolina yesterday.

Nice idea. Having the bait low down inside the noose appears to provide a way of not having to build a 'cubby' around the trap (to prevent approach from the wrong side). Thank you.

The trap is very similar to the San Bushman bird trap (shown below). However the version you've shown is even simpler in that it does away with the ring of sticks.
