Cool stop motion pictures

You guys should get a hold of the book Stopping Time by "Doc" Harold Edgerton, the pioneer of this field of photography. He had both a scientist's inquisitiveness and a master artist's sense of composition.

You might also look for the book Caught In Time by Stephen Dalton, the pioneer of applying these techniques to photographing organisms.

Oh yah! Poppa flash! He even stopped the bullets dead in their tracks. I blew up a flash tube building some of his high speed strobe circuits... the tube was rated for 100 joules and near as I can figure I was pumping less than half that through it, but I was doing it so quickly that I guess the energy density was too much for it (normal camera strobes flash durration is between 1/20,000 and 1/50,000 of a second and I was trying to cut it down to 1/500,000 at most, using short copper bus bars and oil-filled discharge capacitors charged to about 1,200 volts to keep the inductance down. Amazing stuff!

I was fortunate to have Doc Edgerton as a professor while I was a student at MIT in the 50's. In addition to his creative engineering work he was a great teacher and a very down to earth guy. At the end of the semester he invited all the folks that took his course to his house for a cookout.
