C Bryant sent me this really cool firestarting kit he made, including a striker he forged himself.

I decided I needed a pouch to carry it all in, so this morning I went to the shop and made this leather pouch to go on my belt.

Now I need to practice using it!

That's awesome John and a great gesture from CBryant !

I think you should consider adding those leather pouches to your items for sale !!!!

New collaboration project? I would probably be in for one, as long as they weren't too expensive.

very cool John... that is a neat little fire kit.. Christian is a great guy, he also gave me a few of those as well.... each one had a tin knife in it too....:D

nice job on that pouch...

If you do decide to make these you could even sew a sheath into the inside of the pouch for a tin knife. That would be really cool.

+1 on that. These are an awesome little concept.

I think this idea is great as well. Keep everything you need in a neat little package and protect the other pieces from that little razor!

Maybe the tin knife sheath could be part of the flap but on the inside...if ya get me !!!

No need for a collaboration project. C Bryant`s leather work puts mine to shame :o I could do the Tin knife part.

Nice pouch John, and great pics! I had to look twice at this one to see that is was what made, the pics make it look like some kind of professional outfit lol. Let me know if you need a few tips on using it. They are super easy to use once you understand and get the hang of it. If you have never used one before it can seem impossible without some helpful tips. You should definitely throw a tin knife and a ferro rod in the pouch too. Good times. I might just have to make myself a little pouch like that!

Thanks for the comments guys. John, enjoy it! I know you claimed the first one I make for sale, but you have been more than kind and a good friend. So you are going to have to live with the freebie for now!

I made three of these for the CA Bush Bash, and assembled the kit in an altoids tin, I had a few tin knives hanging around so I threw those in as well along with a ferro rod. Rain scared most folk away from the Bash so we really didn't do much trading, and I had no intention of bringing them back home so I gave Mike and Family two at the bash, and sent John the third (I figure he can add his own tin knife).

I put the kit together because of the tin knife. It makes a great ferro rod striker, and (thus the name) fits in an altoids tin perfectly. The ferro rod, tin knife and a little tinder did not fill the tin, so I decided to get some more forging practice in and made a striker. I threw in some char cloth and flint to fill the tin and BAM, a really sweet fire kit built around the tin knife.

Here was the first one I made, shows how it all packs up nice in the tin. I can't believe I did not originally post this in John's Forum.

You are too kind sir! I wouldn't quite go that far, I'm still learning the in's and out's of it leather work. I assure you, that if any of my leather work looks really nice it was pure luck! I'm still trying to be able to make the same sheath twice and have it come out the same as the first.

So, I guess this is as good a place as any to let the cat out of the bag for a quick second. I am very rapidly approaching my 1000th post (too rapidly, I'm running out of time!). I will be having a contest/giveaway (no idea what yet) and TIME WILLING, I will have a fire kit or two ready to go as prizes. Though seeing as this is I think post 984, I may have a slightly bleated contest/giveaway.

Hey John now your in pouch making mode how about a pouch that accepts an Altoids tin that could be worn around the neck ?

Maybe with a loop on the side for a fire steel !!!!
