That tool is called a "froe," and he's using it with a mallet. The froe is used for exactly that: splitting wood. They used to be used a lot for splitting shingles.

When you use a froe , you call it riving (like diving) instead of splitting. A froe is a great thing to have in a tool box for making quick work of logs for woodcrafting.. Notice the riving post that he has for leverage.

I'm with you, I could never figure out that embeding either. I'll figure it out one day!

That is unbelievable. I passed on a hand drill at a swap meet a few weeks ago and I'm kicking myself since. It and a drawknife are on my list of tools to pick up.

Now I'm going to go whip me up a chair (yeah right!)

This video kinda reminds me of that Alaskan guy who lived alone and made most of his own things. I think Dick Pronneke was his name. It is pretty amazing what you can do with a few tools and some skill.
