Coolest Fire Piston ever? I'd say so!

Here is a new fire piston from Emil Banks(EBPrimitives), it is called the Fire Piston With an Edge. I will let the photos do the talking.

Here it is in its sheath(Very hard leather, thought it was kydex at first) Its about 4.5 inches long and the edge is about 2.5 inches. I am not sure on the weight, but needless to say it feels perfect in my hand.

Here is the head and the sheath. High polish and sharp as all get out.

It has a wedge. It was hard to tell whether the wedge was wood or metal(due to the stain) but after my incredibly scientific analysis(i.e. bumping my tooth against it) I determined it is in fact metal.

Here is the piston end. Thanks to his seal string(allowing air to escape around the seal and letting you safely and easily push the piston all the way down for storage), the piston slides out easily which could be a problem but the leather thong secures it very well.

The piston its self. Great construction, and like his other pistons, lights incredibly easy.

And of course it comes with all the goodies: Extra cedar shavings for your tinder tinder box, extra tinder for the piston itself(about a life times supply), lube, cleaning stick, tinder box and extra seals.

This is a great little tool, though I didn't have time to cut anything as I received right before I started getting ready for work. Its sharp, feels great in your hand and the piston is amazing. My only complaint!!! the haft is a little sticky from the stain he used, but I have fine steel wool so i can correct this.

He plans on listing them on eBay regularly.

edit: I plan on making a sheath for it, with a pouch to carry tinder, lube etc. I'll post pictures when ever I get around to making it.

thats a massive fire piston, and very clever to stow it in a hawk handle!

got pics of it lit? :)

wow! that's a great idea and looks amazing. I don't have a super need for hatchet, but is he planning on making one of them out of a knife handle? Perhaps something like one of the CRK fixed blade's with the hollow handle and make it into a piston.

I tried to get a picture but my macro setting wasn't agreeing with me and I was in a hurry. I will try to tomorrow, maybe a short video if I feel like it lol.

That its a great question, and a really cool idea. He may eventually.

I don't know how the tang would fit though.

That's cool as hell, sweet setup.

Can't wait to really play with it.

What will they think of next:thumbup:

How neat! The actual blade looks really well done and sharp too:cool:

So what steel and wood are the blade and handle?

man.. that thing is cool... i want one...:o i have one of emil's regular fire piston's.. i love it...

He does make a mean fire piston. I have one from Darrel Aune that is beautiful, but it uses a string gasket and I just can't re wrap it right. Emil's piston though...damn.

Whoah, great price!
Let us know how it chops.
I was going to drill a hole in my GB mini for a firesteel, but I was worried it may weaken the handle, I may do it now though.

Looks like there is enough room in the head of the piston to drill out and glue in a spy capsule as well (tinder holder). I put the spy capsule in the butt of a tomahawk I put a handle on and have lit fires with that and my firesteel, using the piston would take it a step further. I can't believe how cheap it is!!

Quick question- Could a Ferro rod be used as the piston? Kill 2 birds that way, just divot the end of the ferro to hold the tinder? I'm sure there must be a reason that it is not used this way.

Ya the price kind of shocked me as well. His largest pistons alone cost 38 bucks(worth every penny btw) and for only 30 bucks more you get a great little axe. I had to wait a few days to snag it until I got paid, but about an hour after I got my check I bought one(he had three). I couldn't let it slip away.

Kris- I think there is enough room in the pistons head to attach a spy cap.

And I don't think a ferro rod would work as the piston, due to its ever diminishing diameter.
