For any of you interested, I finally put a few stories of my coon hunting up on the site provided by the generous El Chivato. There are several involving big knives.

Warning! Though I do not intentionally dwell on gory details, I describe the events rather frankly, and it can get a bit messy at times. If that sort of thing offends you, PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THE LINK! Otherwise, enjoy.

Added: it would be best if you start reading threads from the bottom, where I explain the reasons & methods for doing this.

Interesting. Those coons are tough! I have a couple under my porch, and they are completely docile & harmless, even social. Very smart critters, they play in the yard at night. But then, they aren't eating my crops either. Very interesting observation on the difficulty of effectively stabbing a resistant creature.

Just wanted to let you know I just put up few more stories. These are mostly about folders and smaller fixed blades, so probably more people here can relate. It's the thread titled "using smaller blades".

Isn't that what that Malibu dude said about those brown bear also.......don't be lulled into thinking these are anything other than wild animals.

for those interested, I got another possum the other night, using a medium sized Bowie. Follow the link at the top for the details.

very interesting read! i was a little unnerved at the details, yet intrigued. i understand your position, and i figure i would do the same thing. the coons seem to be very resilient creatures.

forgive my city-slicker leanings, but i am curious: are the carcasses of the critters useful for anything? food, or their coats, or who-knows-what? sorry if this is a dumb question.

Eating coons is debatable. Seems to depend what part of the country your in, I personally don't have any desire to try it, but in some places I've heard its relatively popular.
Hides have varying value, depending on if you want to tan it or sell it raw. Not a whole lot either way, low enough that people pretty much quit trapping (except for pest control like I do, killed 28 on the farm this summer) and only hunt for fun. Haven't got to check out Possum's new stories, but judging from the old ones he doesn't worry about hides either. They have to be in one peice to sell, a little tricky with that monster bowie and an uncooperative target ;)

I'm not quite as brave as him, I use a .22. I like cutting brush and firewood an all, but thats relatively easy to only cut what your aiming at. If I started dancin with a coon, well....the best case scenario would be chipping the blade on my steel toed boots ;)

thanks for the info, Matt! i agree on the "dancin with a coon" remark; i'm not stabbing anything with teeth and nails, that knows how to use them! i'd be in the market for a good elephant gun!

OMG! That's crazy. :) Although my one friend went after a possum with a Gerber EZ Out, way to small. Just hope you all don't get rabies! :) When I was a lad I once took out a ground hog with an over sized machete.

:) Heheheh...

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Tell ya what. I'd really like to answer your questions, but the whole reason El Chivato created this site for me, was so I could keep my stories off other boards. If I start going into details here, I'm liable to offend someone, or get the site owners sued by PETA, or taint the reputation of this place. If you don't mind, please put any questions on the Racoon Page, and I'll try to answer them there. Also, that way, if someone else has the same question, it will be right there for them as well.

Thanks.

Just wanted to let ya'll know I put up a few more old stories involving my old 21" long Bowie.

Matt-
When I was looking for this thread I came across your post in Whine & Cheese about your coon problems. I can laugh since it's not me for a change!:D Thanks for sharing.

I can laugh now too. Haven't seen any sign of them around the barn this winter although there are still a few tracks here and there out in the pasture. And the gander mountain in town is now carrying traps and lures :D

Read your stories Possum and really enjoyed them. Wished I was agile and fast enough to run down a coon or possum. Hunted them when I was younger but always used either a shotgun or .22cal. There are a lot of coons and possums in my neighborhood, you can tell by the number you see dead on the road that have been killed while napping on the road.
