I enjoy my Coote grinder very much. As for the tensioning... I screwed out the guide wheels spring screw almost as much as possible, yet just barely being able to slide on and off the belts. You could also increase the spring tension by getting yourself a thicker dia. wire coil spring, as this will increase it tension strength.
As for the traction wheel... I haven't encountered any problems with slipage... you may want to clean your wheel surface with acetone and keep your belts away from any oils or grease's. Furthermore, you can remove your wheel and using a bandsaw.. cutting shallow slots on the surface of the wheel to aid... space the slots maybe 3/4" or so apart.
Good luck,.. hope this is of some help.

i like the idea of cutting my own slots for traction and i will stop using belt lube to see if that is adding to vibration, also wanted to share with you that i can up with a spring tention arm that you bolt to the frame that has a half circle on the belt side that i pad with the grafhit cloth. this allows me to use hermes superflex belts for convex finish work, i told norman about the idea and he welded one together no charge! great man to do biz with. i am looking at the hardecore grinder to add a second machine, laurence wwwrhino knives.com
