Coote Belt Grinder

I have a Coote that is rigged with step pullies. I am very satisfied with it. It's a great machine for the money.

A lot of folks around here recommend it as a starter machine. Run a search and you'll be able to turn up a lot of info.

FWIW- I've never seen someone unhappy with their Coote on these forums.

Since I mostly make Bowies, I use a 4X36 most of the time, and am about to get a 6X48. So my Cootes is set up for smaller blades and finishing - it's a 2X48". If you mainly use yer Cootes for grinding a 72" is probably best.

Here's my set up with a 1HP GE Motor -

I have a 2"X72" coote with a 10" wheel on it, and I'd say its about the best money I've spent for my shop so far. Very nice machine, not just for the money, but a nice machine.
I have mine set up with step pullies, also bought from norm. And I welded up a hinged motor mount out of some angle iron so that all I have to do to change speeds is lift the motor up and move the belt over. No tensioners to adjust, no tools or anything to worry about.
I went with a 1-1/2 HP Dayton,1725 rpm, high torque, capacitor start, farm duty motor. Totally enclosed and fan cooled of course. This thing is a beast, you can't bog it down, and it was less than $150 new from graingers.

I'd have really liked to get a KMG, but the basic platen model cost as much without a motor, as I have spent total on my coote. And I like to hollow grind so I'd have had more expense in getting a wheel set up for the KMG. Now don't take this the wrong way, I'm not knocking the KMG or saying its overpriced, I'm just trying to illustrate what a value the coote is, giving you the ability to hollow grind or flat grind at this price point. For someone on a budget, this is probably the best deal you'll find.

I'm planning to get one for my shop. What do you suppose is best for grinding small blades

If you're wondering about wheel size I would recommend the 10". I have used mine for blades as long as 8" and as short as 1". It might not be ideal for really tiny stuff, but in that case you could always flat grind on the platen or even convex grind with the slack belt portion.
I used to do a lot of grinding on an 8" wheel and that gives good results also, but I like the 10" better. I definitely would not go down to a 6".
