Edit: I just saw that its not you who has it for trade...didnt look close enough :foot:

Hey,

Let me know if you still have it. I need a better one than the craftsman 2x42 that I have. Plus Im not far so I could pick it up and maybe get some tips...

Thanks for the headsup Micheal. I am always looking for another grinder.

"Now that's a novel way to get some custom knives." I hadn't really thought about that, but it's true! I'll never have the time to actually do any making, but I still like and use quality knives every day!

A few more points on the trade.

I live in Bakersfield, but will pack and ship with care anywhere. I have references, and you can check me out.

What I'd like is at least one working blade, as I camp out quite a bit. Maybe a 4" blade, slight drop point, exotic wood, full tang (?), quality sheath and great edge holding. I like D2, 01, and the traditional steels (except 440C). Damascus is great, but not required. ATS34 I haven't used.........

Perhaps I could get even a credit for about what I paid, and someone here could do a custom job? Maybe a fair trade would be a couple of matched blades, one for camping and one for self-defense (?). I'm really not up on the market, but will yeild to the good folks here for what is fair. I'm not looking to gain anything, but would like this grinder to find a good home..

The first guy (with a good reputation) that makes a fair offer will get the grinder ASAP. I'd be willing to wait a couple on months for my end, and trust you on that.

Is this fair guys?

Mike

Warrant, I will work something out with you, if you have a mind to. 2 knives for a Coote is fine with me, but the grinder will need to be shipped to TX, 76707. D-2 or O-1 is fine or any steel, except any particle steels.

Guys, thanks for all your replies. I didn't have much time to decide, so I went with my gut. I visited all the sites sent me, and I've learned a helluva lot. There is a BUNCH of talent on this board, and I have no idea why I didn't know about it.

After searching all the links, I had to make a call. And the only criteria I used was how "close" the maker came to being the artist whose creations were what I imagined I would do.........if I were a bit younger, and in different circumstances. I've learned to trust my instinct, as well I should.

Everyone has a different set of perspectives. I am no different. Mine aren't right or wrong, they are just mine. I ask that none of you disparage me for my decision, but applaud me for making it.

I've decided to send the grinder and motor to Michael Kanter. He had the option to make me a pair of blades or one great one. Go figure. He wanted to make a great one. The working title of this creation is "Understated Elegance." It will be a working blade and damascus. He has agreed to post pictures of the finished work, and I have agreed to write a review after I've used/abused/worked this knife to death. I need the knife. I wore out my other 3 production types.

My expertise isn't in custom knives. It's in tools. Many, many tools. And after this surprising feedback, I've decide to search high and low, and maybe build a few "tools" you knifemakers may like. Get ready, because after this, and a good outcome, I plan on donating a few to budding artisians.

Think I'm kidding? Not too damn likely.....

Mike

Thanks for the chance to make this knife for you. We have already exchanged a few ideas and i think the final design is going to be something special.

By the way, anyone out there make some nice 1095 and L6 damascus? I think I'm going to need a piece or 2.
