This is a strange question, but what is the length between the two wheels on a Coote?

I'd also like some more information about tracking. I did an extensive search last night, but didn't come up with much. In a Coote-style grinder, does the tracking device move the wheel in and out? Does anyone have any pictures of some up close? I found some in my search, but all the links were broken.

Michael,
The wheel distance is going to very with drive wheel size, my coote has the 10" drive wheel and from center to center its 25 inches, and the tracking device tilts the wheel in and out with a simple thumb screw.

Good luck

Bill

I appreciate that. It seems like everytime I raise money for a Coote, something comes up and I have to spend my Coote money (okay sometimes it's knives).

A buddy has a plasma cutter and I've got a welder. It may be time to get time to see how mechanically inclined I am. I've got a pretty simple design in mind that "should" work. It's simply a vertical two-wheel set-up like the Coote except the idler wheel is attached to a short "cross-bar" lever on the top of the grinder. It gets its tension from a spring attached to the opposite side of the idler/tracking wheel that hooks onto the vertical piece.

I also have the 10 inch drive wheel. Mine measures about 24 3/4 inch center to center. The tracking is adjusted by tilting the top wheel up or down and it does not pull the wheel in or out but just tilts it.

Here some picture of my Coote tracking system...

I hope this can helps you and give you some idea...

Alain,

That should be a great help. Nice pics too.

It dawned on me today that I was misleading in my measurement of 24 3/4 inch. I did not take into account that I have a pryrocerom plate on my platen. That makes a difference with the grinding belt installed because it compresses the loading spring more and makes the distance a little shorter. Mikes 25 inches is probably more accurate than my measurement.

Thanks for the pics. I'm working on something - I knew I should have gotten a degree in engineering.

Looks good I need to get mine up and running I just got the 1 Hp 3450 rpm motor for free yesterday I plan on setting mine up on pullys I think i will just use a valve spring as a tensioner and a skate board wheel as a idler

Skateboard wheel -- that's interesting, I just visited a skateboard shop yesterday, but the only wheels that would work were going to be the ones for "longboards" for 40 bucks a set. I talked to Grizzly, and found that I can just buy the idler/tracking wheel from their grinder for $13.

I can probley get the skateboard wheel for free (we use them as chain tensioners on drag bikes) Although I may just Make my one on the lathe
but for 13 bucks I may just order it does it come with bearings? if so I will surely get it

i belive mr coote will sell you the ideler/tracking wheel or the whole tention assembly. its worth a call. if you are going to build your own. i myself won't buy anything from grizzly.

Roger, do you thinck that pyroceram plate are a good idea ?
Is that worth the price?

Did you reposition your platen or simply stuck over your original
platten without changing his position?

Alain, let me butt in here and say the pyro works great. i have just used a few drops of super and bonded straight to the platen. i bought several pieces from a company called stemimich? another forumite gave me their address. i have misplaced it and need more. anyone know of suppliers? also when the pieces gets some grooves in it i shatter it off with a wooden mallet, clean up on the disk sander and glue on a new piece.
