Copper and oil, oh my!

Fascinating story !! I worked for the power company in NYC when I was in school in the early '60s. They were just beginning to to use underground high power transmssion and they had to learn a few things. The one thing I remember was a failure due to a piece of old steel near the cable .It caused some currents that shorted out the cable . After that they would dig a larger trench for the cable and lay in a bed of clean sand around the cable !
Engineering can be fun ! OJT is not in the book and the public has no clue about what's going on !
