The company I work for is having some roofing done and they are trashing the copper(?) flashing. My question is this,,, is this actually copper? It appears to be copper and is very soft , heck i cut it with the serrated blade on my Gerber pliers. If it is, can it be used to make the copper "collar" (whats that called?) on a Japanese knife? I could get my hands on a lifetimes supply if I hurry. Thanks,,, JM

JM, the flashing will be too thin for making habaki, the collar you referred to, but you'll find plenty of uses for the stuff, from shims to sheath trim to...

I think the only time I've ever let free metal or wood get away from me is when I was walking! :D

Flashing usually is pure copper soft annealed for easy forming. Also makes a fine liner between wooden handles and the tang, just drill a lot of through holes for the epoxy. Just don't plan on using it where it will get scuffed, it is darned soft and scratches easily.
