I tip my hat to Baker Forge for the coppermascus. I bought a couple of their scrap boxes, there were a couple of pieces large enough to make 2-4" hidden tangs this slip joint, lots of good pieces left.

I'm having a little trouble posting images but you get the idea.

Call me stupid, but why would you want strips of copper in your blade?
It looks interesting, but copper was outmoded 2000 years ago as a blade material.

It's hot stuff material and the edge is fully hardened, why not.

I guess as long as the copper is not near the edge, it would work OK.
When the copper oxidizes to dark brown, it won't show up. And the steel's integrity has to be weakened by inclusion of copper.

Is nickel laminated in a san mai blade a superior product? It is hard for me to photograph but my slip joint blade is a damascus of 15N20 and 1084 that is in turn laminated with copper in this case. I just think it is really beautiful steel. I haven't made a slip joint in more than 4 years so this one is far from perfect but it will be my Sunday-go-to-meetin' blade. Good for pickin' my teeth and coring apples. I was made aware of Baker Forge when a friend ordered a pricey piece of steel from them. I made a custom blade for him and was impressed with the steel. His piece is just a strong 1/8" thick, it is 9 layers. The core is damascus, then a layer of nickel, a layer of 1084, a layer of nickel, then a damascus/bronze layer on the exterior. Not everything that I make has to pass an endurance test, I'll give up some performance for looks. Check out the Baker Forge web site, if you are like me, you'll be impressed.

I like the look. Kinda reminds me of Mokume Gane. Copper, apparently, is the hot new material for garden hose fittings. Chinese also sell bracelets made of copper to cure all sorts of imaginary ailments. So I can live with it as a blade material.

The material for my friend's blade is very similar, just substitute bronze for the copper. The material I used is called Riptide Max.
