Hi, does anybody know if the cord wrapped version has threaded mounting holes if one were to add handle slabs at some point?
thanks,
k

Hey Thomas, thanks. I guess i'd have to drill and tap then if I planned on adding scales. Not sure what that means with hardened steel. Still got the TAK?

I had some Scandinavian blade blanks that had only the blade hardened, not the handles, so I was able to drill through the handles. If you need to drill through hard steel you will need to use a carbide drill or end mill. Enlarging a hole with a drill is much easier than starting a new hole. Good luck trying to tap hardened steel. The only way I know of to get threads in a hardened steel hole is to use EDM (electrical discharge machining). This is expensive.

To see if the handle is hard (without a hardness tester) simply hit it with a file. If the file just "bounces off" it is pretty hard steel. If it removes material easily it is soft.

i got the gi tanto with the scales. the paracord version just looks cool. i cant think of a better $20 value these knives take a beating.

no need to tap the holes for adding a handle surely?

Correct. No need at all. In fact, I have yet to come across a knife that had threaded holes- nobody does that. The bolt is threaded- it screws into itself. The hole through the blade is just a spot for the bolt to pass through- and hold it into place.

this is true

right, wasn't thinking properly regarding the threads. still, too much work when the poly scaled version is $6 more. thanks for all responses.

the scaled one is cheaper on knifecenter. $1 cheaper.

I Honestly can't remember if mine had enough holes under the wrap to pin a handle to it. When I cut the cord off, I wrapped the handle in tape for more weight. I only use that knife for throwing. I can tell you it has withstood tons of throwing and misses. Many other blades I have used have broken or bent, including designated throwing knifes.
