Cord wrapped handle, what's your story ?

I've been carrying a Snody Kozuka (I think it's a kozuka) for a couple of years. Very sharp, and very strong knife. The thing that bugs my mind is, how durable is a epoxy-treated cord wrapped handle ?

Beluga-- How is that handle holding up for you? I carried a cord wrapped kozzie for years and that handle held up fine. What are your concerns?

The handle holds up well, but it's just my paranoia telling me that it's still made of cotton. Perhaps it's one of those unreasonable paranoid. :)

Beluga---is the cotton wrap soaked in epoxy? Mine are, or I might be a little concerned then. Have you seen a Leu Kozuka?

First off, thanks for buying a SnodyKnife!!

I appreciate the fact that your spending paper on my work.

I use nylon on all my handles.

My only source of income is Knifemaking and I cant afford to have work coming back so I over-engineer as a precautionary measure.

The coating that I use to seal the cord wrapped handle is a product used widely in the "Custom Fishing Rod" industry. Its the same coating that is used to seal the threads on $1,000 high end, big game offshore fishing rigs.

This is not something you can but at Walmart,Home Depot or Lowes.

So basically what you have is a UV resistant epoxy resin on top of nylon.

This is a resin that cures through chemically induced polymerization.

Shout at me if I can ever help you with anything.

I also build high performance custom fishing rods,

Here are few images

I enjoy tig welding and this one of my custom fishing carts for Pimping on the Pier.

You got to make a statement!

The Pimp Cart was polished, shot with Purple Powder Coat, then shot with gold metal flake followed by three clear coats,

Its dripping wet, dripping money.

Love your style, knives:thumbup: wonderful, buggy nice:thumbup:,a thing for benchtop drill presses, priceless:D

Nice threadwork! Nice epoxy work too, that takes a hell of a lot of time and practice to do right, and you are doing it right.

If you pre-mark the corners where the diamonds stop, and make sure to account for the change in blank diameter along the length of the wrap, you can keep them a little more even. Keep those interior threads from getting to cramped at the top and bottom. Try some of the HT metallic threads too, they really POP!

Sweet cart too, but isn't that diamond plate a little over the top? Whacha got in there, money?

Mike,

Don't you do something with Petroleum or not anymore? Safety and Quality Control consultant! Or MAYBE your WEBSITE IS OUTDATED and you need to update it :D

Thanks!

Pohan Leu

PS! Damn you have a lot of DRILL PRESSES!!!

Thanks for the info Mike, now that you have put my mind at ease, I'm gonna use it even more. The one I have was probably one of your earliest knives. It is a kozuka (I think)with a BG42 black blade, black ray skin, and black nylon, without menuki on its handle. The black coating was ruined during its service years, so I put a satin finish on the blade. Looks like new now. :D one of my favorite EDC.

Those are nice rods you got. You know you make me wanna TROLL ! :D

Cord wrapped handles with epoxy are HIGHLY durable. My EDC for the past several years is a cord wrapped small blade from Phill Hartsfield and it's like new. I don't remember the exact details, but I remember Phill telling about a large blade carried across the back by a member of the military in combat. It took a bullet, which saved his life, and was mostly intact, with, I think, a crack. (He replaced it at no charge.)

Cord wrapped handles can be very strong. I have made many and never had to replace a single one.
To remove them from the knife, they had to be ground from the tang as cutting the threads wouldn´t do.
Hey, Mike! Will you put an engine on that cart???

Mr. Leu---I'm glad you switched from the sewing thread and Elmer's glue wrapped handle handle to what you're doing now. Big improvement!! lol.

The area where the bullet hit (i think it was a .308 round) snapped in half only because of the old way Phill used to grind attach/guards. Since then he changed the way he does it as if the same round were to hit the new and improved blade he makes now which eliminates the weak spot in the old design, all you'd get is a dent and someone with a headache :D
