This weekend I had a chance to test Cold Heat's cordless heated seat. This is a nice compact heating pad that weighs about a pound maybe less. I was out at the camp enjoying a day on the lake ice fishing. Many times I find myself getting cold as the day wears on. But with this unit everything has changed, now my comfort level has never been better on these cold weather trips.
I paid $80 for the seat. It uses a rechargeable NiMh battery pack, that charges in about 4 hours, and can be charged any time without worry of memory effect.
The seat has 3 heat settings, and for most of the time I found medium more than enough. The manufacturer claims that it will run 1.5 hours on high, 3 hours on medium, and 6 hours on low.
After an hour I started feeling cold. I set it on high for a couple of minutes before the seat was nice and warm. After that I set it to medium, and later to low. I have never felt so comfortable and warm, and this unit has taken comfort levels to a whole new level. I can see this being used on cold canoe trips, hunting, ice fishing and just about anywhere for cold damp weather activities.
The cover is very durable and weather/water resistant. The seat makes sitting on cold hard surfaces like benches much more comfortable. It also comes with a 12 volt cord for use with a cigarette lighter for charging.
The only drawback is how the battery pack plugs in. Cold Heat would have done better by making the battery pack plug in like in cordless tools. Instead it uses small plug jacks that are a bit awkward. However, I would still highly recomend getting one, especially if one spends alot of time in a cold environment.
