Hi all.
I received a Corehart knife from Michael Hill of Core Knife Co. (Core Knife Co. is also his handle here on BF) almost a couple months ago. i have been wanting to do a review since then. i have good news and bad news. the good news is that i am finally posting this knife. the bad news is that it is not much of a review.

here are the specs from Michael:
3/16" 1095 Steel @ 58-60
Handles are Stabilized Desert Ironwood over 1/8" Natural Canvas Micarta
(3) 1/4" Natural Micarta Pins and (2) 1/8" Natural Micarta pins
OAL is 9-1/2"
Handle is 4-7/8"
Blade Length is 4-1/2"

mike was great to work with. he had the knife available, but let me decide on a handle. we chatted back and forth about it, and i finally came to a decision. he then pinged me a little while later saying that he just got in some cool desert ironwood and asked if i wanted to use it for the Corehart. he didn't have to do that, and i appreciate very much that he did.

when i received the Corehart, my first impression was "wow." the knife is just gorgeous. fit and finish was outstanding. and, the desert ironwood with the natural micarta really is awesome. my second impression was that the knife was a brute. i have never had a knife at 3/16" and it has quite a heft to it.

Mike was out of sheaths at the time i purchased it. so, i sent it to Heber Ellsworth (wildmanh on BF). Heber was also great to work with. we went back-and-forth via email and i finally settled on just a simple, pouch style sheath. i want this knife to be a user, so i figured less is more, as far as the sheath is concerned. and, heber nailed it. you might notice a couple dye marks on it in the pics, but that did not matter to me. the construction was top-notch. and the fit is great.

i took this knife out on a hike last weekend....just getting around to posting. i wanted to do some woods-testing, but i screwed up my own plan. i had forgotten that i decided to try my [non-existant] stropping skills on this edge. i made it pretty dull.

sooo...how about i just post some pics? thanks to Michael and Heber for a fine product. i hope to use this thread as a place holder for future testing.

Camels Hump VT. here's a couple pics from the top. couldn't resist throwing them in here. quite the view. i could see east to the White Mountains; west to Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks; north to Mount Mansfield and Canada; and south to...well...south.

can't see much of the Corehart in this pic. but, i thought the silhouette, with the lake in the background, made for a cool pic anyway. so, here you go.

Todd, those are some good pictures and some nice scenery! :) Sorry about the Dye smudges, I have some pinched nerves in my back that flare up now and again causing my hands to twitch and shake. I was finishing your sheath up during one such flare up and you can see the result. :foot: I'm glad you like the sheath despite the slip up. If you ever have any problems with it, let me know and I'll get it fixed pronto!

I may have to talk Michael out of a Corehart one of these days. ;)

it's all good heber. the "smudges" don't bother me a bit. it's not what i would call a flaw in the sheath....just aesthetics. and, as i think i told you....this is going to be a user! and yeah...if you can...i would highly recommend one of michael's knives. looks like he's gotta bunch of good ones.

thanks again for the great sheath heber. oh yeah...don't know if i mentioned it...but the fit is spot-on!

I really appreciate the honest review and you taking the time to put this up here. Like I said in our PM, I offered to put a new edge on it, not because you "dorked it up" as you put it, but because I've changed the way I sharpen my knives. I grind my blades on a leather backed rotary platen which means they are convex from the top of the grind line around to the edge. In the past, your knife included, I wold get it "pretty" thin then I would then put a small bevel on the edge. I felt like it made the edge stronger. A few weeks ago I found a gap on one of the handles of a Coremuk I had just finished. I wasn't going to sell it after finding the gap so instead I did some field testing. I took that convex around to zero and very thin. I then proceeded to make numerous fuzz sticks, baton hardwoods and knots, cut down boxes and just put the edge though stress. When I was done I put it to my leg and the hair flew off. The edge held up beautifully. Ever since then I've been taking my edges much thinner and the feedback has been outstanding.

I'm a relatively new maker and I have a lot to learn about the craft. I have no problem admitting that I am making changes as I discover better methods. I also have no problem reworking an edge for someone who owns one of my knives. If it weren't for people like you, supporting me and trusting in me, I would only be making knives for myself. I appreciate you, bro!

Here are my pictures of your knife.
