I wuz always having minute scratches left here and there, even
after going to 2000grit and buffing.

In SRJ's subhilt video I rented he uses cork belts - 400 and 600 grit.
He recommend breaking down the grit by going it @ with a metal bar
for 10m or so. I figure one might as well get plain cork, in addition.

In any event, it is then loaded with green compound. They last forever
he sez.

So I am ordeing me a few on Monday :) and will give it a try .

You will love them ! Try all the grit sizes from 150 up to 800,as well as the plain cork polish belts.I think Klingspore has them on special? You do have to break them in.

I use cork on "plain" steel. I found out the hard way if you use a compound loaded cork belt on damascus before etching it don't etch worth a crap anymore.

Make sure you break them in by taking a piece of barstock and using against the belts like you are grinding a profile. You have to do that for 10 minutes minimum, each belt, to prepare them properly. Wear eye and respiratory protection as pieces will fly all over the place. It will be much smoother when the 10 minutes ends if you did it right.
If you wish to verify that information, I'd suggest making a post in Steve's forum at whatever that place is called now, used to be CKD.

Or send him an email. He'll go into more detail with you. You just don't take those belts out of the box and start using them without proper break in if you wish to attain the proper results.
