Cork Belts?

I thought I'd try a 2"x72" cork belt for edge sharpening or blade finishing. I ordered a 1000 grit cork belt from Sheffield's Knife Supplies. They no longer carry those and said they'd ship a 400 grit instead.

I've never used or even seen a cork belt before, but I thought it would be soft cork like a cork backed ruler or something similar. Well, after receiving it, it feels more like a 36 grit belt! So much for the polishing idea...ouch!

I'll keep it, and try it where I'd use a coarse grit belt. But, I'm wondering if I asked for the wrong thing. Does anyone use a cork belt for edge sharpening or blade finishing? If so, what should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance!
Allan

Almost forgot...the belt I have is made by Hermes if this makes any differance.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like breaking it in is the key. I'll be sure to use some crap material...oops...I mean "scrap".

yes, the cork belts looked strange to me the first time i got some. the 400g ones give a nice satin finish. also in case the brand hermes is new to you they are top notch. they make a belt called a super flex that great for the convex grinds i do and guys that hollow grind love them too!

Anyone that has used cork belts much will also tell you that the harder the metal the better they seem to work especially compared to most other belts and the have a great life use. They sure don't work to well on most handle materials though. Frank.
