The first cork belt that I got I nearly sent back because it was so rough, I had ordered a 400 grit belt.
The construction of a cork belt is based on grains of cork glued to a cloth belt then over coated with 400, 600, or 800 grit silicon carbide.
As the belt works the cork grains show through the silicon carbide and act as a polishing surface surrounded by fine grit. At this point the polishing effect can be enhanced by adding a green stainless steel cut and colour compound to the surface.
I use these belts until the cloth shows through or until they rip being put on or off the grinder.
