So I picked up a Passenger a couple years ago and the corkscrew extends farther than any other corkscrew I have. So far that I can’t insert a mini screw driver and get it to close. Could it have been a replacement? Any ideas? I’ve included some comparison photos from the only grooved corkscrews I own.

The corkscrew with the groove is an early design that was needed for manufacturing purposes. Victorinox was able to get rid of the groove in the early/mid 1990s. You can find the old style precision screwdriver that will fit the grooved corkscrew. It has a circular cross section instead of the hexagonal one

I think you should be happy, actually - length matters for cork screws, you are less prone to break a cork with a longer cork screw. I where you, I'd just modify the mini screw driver with a file to fit.

That I understand. all three of the corkscrews pictured are grooved, one just happens to be significantly longer. I was just wondering why, as I’ve never seen one extend that far before. That’s where I was wondering if it had possibly been replaced at one time and they maybe had models that used a longer corkscrew? I can get the mini screwdrivers to fit just fine in the other grooved corkscrews, just not this one due to the length. I’m bored today so I thought I’d throw it out there to see if anyone knew the answer. Thanks for your reply, maybe the older mini screwdriver will go deeper into the grooves…if I can find one.

Hey Jim I have a couple swiss army knives, and I'd say of the fluted style I'd have a good number with a longer corkscrew like yours.
Below is a picture of a Champion with the slightly longer corkscrew.
In my experience I'd also say the round screwdriver is pretty much fits exactly the same as the hex finished driver. If anything the round is slightly overall larger in size. I haven't checked them all but in general I find the screwdrivers don't like fitting in the longer corkscrews... And yes Jim I am bored on this wet morning too.

I’d say that one might fit my Passenger!!! I may have to just take one and do a little sanding to see if I can get it down in a bit farther.

Was the groove for manufacturing purposes or intended to allow cork material to have a place to go as the corkscrew was screwed into the cork?
