Correcting blade play on manix 2?

Hello all,
I recently let my brother in law use my manix 2 to open some packages. He apparently could not figure out how to close my knife. I don't know what exactly he did, but it now has a lot of side to side blade play. I've tried tightening the pivot, it helped, but not as much as I had hoped. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you learned the golden rule of not loaning out your knives.

It causes my brain to short circuit to watch someone try to figure out a simple mechanical device, fail, and then FORCE said device. Because that makes profound sense. . .

Sorry about your predicament. I'm not aware of anything else that affects blade play besides the pivot.

The simplest and most obvious answer is to call spyderco and see what they'd recommend.

You could take it apart and see if there's something bent internally. Maybe a washer kinked or some foreign object entered that isn't letting your pivot take up all that slack. Also check to make sure everything is sitting whete it should be, and all the hardware is tight.

If the knife was fine at first, it's not a warranty issue anyway but a damage issue. So on that line of thinking, you could try the disassembly first since you're not going to be covered under warranty.

Contrary to popular belief, taking your knife apart is not the warranty ender everyone argues about. It's just an idiot buffer so companies can refuse free repairs to the previously mentioned morons who can't figure out mechanical devices and force crap where it shouldn't go.

Call Spyderco and talk to someone. They'll treat you right.

Hard lessons learned. Don't loan knives out.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! I really should have known better. I havent taken the knife apart yet. I was actually wondering if there could be washer damage. I suppose I'll try that next (afraid of what I may find).

I always have a disposable knife in my vehicle for loaners.
Buck 112/110 sized with plastic frame, Bucklite model 422/426 series,,,, if someone trashes it,,, well,,, not a great loss.
Introduced in the early 1980's they go for $15 on the big auction site.

Many years ago a friend broke the blade on a very old treasured slip joint,, never again.

Regards,
FK

Dont open it especially if you do not know what you are looking for much less be able to repair it.

If the blade or ball cage show no signs of damage. Then my money is on that you need to readjust the pivot and apply lube.

Otherwise send it in and have him flip the bill if it is damaged.

He apparently could not figure out how to close my knife.

I narrowly avoided loan disaster with my PM2 and my ZT 0801 by the same means. Luckily I saw it coming both times and was able to intervene before any real damage was done. The ineptitude of some people to manipulate a simple mechanical device never ceases to dumbfound me.

I will probably have to start carrying a small cheap loaner slip joint--problem is my pocket space is already at a premium.

I sub'd this thread b/c I want to see what solution works for you, so keep us posted. I hope you get it sorted out.

You do not say which Manix 2 you have, but if some of the body screws are loose they can affect the blade somewhat. Still, it sounds odd that the blade is loose. Perhaps he was prying with it?

The best thing to do is buy a budget Spyderco or Byrd and give those out for loaners.

I've found that the screw directly next to the pivot screw on both of my manix's (manixi?) can definitely factor into blade play as well. I'd adjust the other body screws and, if you're still experiencing and issue, send it to spyderco.

Yeah that also happens on a Para 2. Which is exactly why they switched to the floating stop pin on Para 3. Although Manix 2s do not have stop pins but the steel spine of the caged lock is still sandwiched between the liners, held up by 2 set of screws.
On XLs this issue seems to have been resolved by replacing the front set of screws (ones causing problem on your Manix 2) into a fixed floating pin (can be seen at the right margin here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/975037-Manix-2-XL-My-first-impressions?p=11105978#post11105978)

try adjusting the body screws... you'd be surprised to see how much they can affect blade play and whether or not the blade is centered. Hope you figure it out!

I cannot imagine your BIL did any lasting damage trying to close it. Even if he was trying to force it. the Manix is an MBC rated folder. Get to tinkering with those screws!
