Corroded 110's in clam-pack

I went to Academy Sports today to pick up a 110 because I don't have one (I have a 112 and lots of Bucklites, but no standard 110) and they sell them for $27.something.

They had about 8 in stock, and the rear bolster on all of them was discolored and had a smaller dark corroded area where the brass liner meets the steel spacer.

It should be noted that in these clam-packs the bottom corner of the back bolster, the spot most severely corroded, is very close to the leather sheath and there is even a small tube-like part of the clampack that goes between them. Hmm...

I've read a thread with a similar complaint, but I've never heard of a "clam pack"...Is it some kind of plastic packaging??? Like a clear display of the knife & sheath, instead of the box???

I find that when I polish my Bucks with Nevr-Dull, they are bright and shiny for a day or two, but then tarnish quickly (even on velvet, in a drawer) and fingerprints especially show up...

Clam pack packaging is the clear plastic packaging that is made to hang on a hook. Think of the cheap Winchesters at Walmart and how they are hanging around the sporting goods area instead of being under the glass case.
I hate it for knives. You can't get the knife out of it to examine it unless you destroy the packaging.

I got it now! Kind of like the blister pack, but it slides off.

Well, at least it was the leather sheath. I'm reading here that the Wally World Buck 110's come with a Nylon sheath. (Which I personally prefer)... ;)

Carl, what is the year stamp on the knife? It could be an older one they found. Oshmans does it all the time.
As to the problem, Ibelieve like you say it may be the leather sheath or a bit of moisture may be in there from packaging. I found an old 1997 110 like that. You could use Flitz or similar to clean it up or send it to Buck and they can polish the whole thing to a pristine shine.

I couldn't see it. The knife is closed in the package and I did not buy one. No date on the packaging that I could find.

Somehow they got a display model that had an Idaho stamp, but of course I couldn't get that one because they "can't open" the display case. Liars. Anyway, their display model was all new and clean.

I thought about polishing it, but the worst part of it looked like it might be going in between the liner and spacer, and if so I would have a knife corroded from the inside.

That wouldnt be good either. Maybe you could negotiate a deal with them to take the damaged knife off their hands at a discount. You will probably have to talk to the manager, but it would be a thought.

You got me curious as to what my local Wally World had for their Buck 110's...So I went down today and looked...

Yellow boxed 110; Buck 110 USA/Idaho tang stamp; walnut scales; brass bolsters; Nylon sheath. Looked pretty good. $29.95 (+8% tax where I live)

I didn't buy it...but it is definately worth it...

I have bought knives before because I didn't have my EDC and was lost with out something in my pocket :)
A lot of times they come in a clam pack which is impossible to get into with out a knife.
So there I am with a sharp new knife in my hand and no way to get into it. :grumpy: Then when I go get into the packaging I have to worry about cutting myself.
There should be a better way to package things to prevent shoplifting and allowing the customer to see the item with out making it impossible to get into.

Shooting thieves maybe?

So I went to wally-world to get a 110.

It actually had some weird color at the back end, but it rubbed off with alcohol. It comes in a box with a nylon sheath.

The spine of the blade is not straight. It lines up perfectly with the lockbut then curves upward a little and the rest of the blade looks taller than it ought to. I should have looked closer in the store, because now I have to go back to that horrible place to exchange it. Idaho stamp.

Read the back of the clam, or blister pack, Down around the bar codes you should find a mfg date. You have to really look, but it should be there.

The local Gander MT. has tons of new 110's in blister or clam packs. From what I went through, they are all 2003 year models. All were dusty, and looked like they had been in storage somewhere. Didn't pay attention to any discoloration on the bolsters, but it happens on all the brass ones.

I will look closer next time I am there.

I finally found one at Walmart in good shape, the grind lines looked good and no brass problems. Idaho stamp. This is one slick knife for $30. I wish Buck would make more stuff like this (500-series seems to be a little down on the scale). Makes Case look like total garbage, and while 420HC isn't exactly the best steel ever, it beats the heck out of Case's mystery junk.

Thank you for the tip on the K-Mart 20% off this week! (Or was that in another thread??? Anyway, it's correct!) My loacl K-Mart closed some time ago, but there is one not too far from work, so I took a ride over after work...

Clam-pack 110; date at bottom of barcode = 06/23/05; Nylon sheath [box says leather]; knife has some spider scratches in the bolsters from sliding around; wood is perfect; Idaho tang stamp; USA; there is an odd smell on the knife...almost like Cosmoline...???...Yes, there is a kind of greasy coating on the brass...Wipes right off...Blade is straight, backbone is OK, no discoloration on rear bolster, sheath says "Buck 426 05 05" and is 1 3/4" vertical and 1 1/2" horizontal looped, inside sheath it says "Sheath made in China"...hmmm...Not Taiwan, but China...

List $29.95 less 20% = $23.95 + local tax...

I didn't really need it, but since K-Mart accepted my Sears card, why not??? I may just go down to Wally World this payday and get a boxed 110 there as well...I'll find someone to make a gift of it to, I'm sure... :D
