Let me frame this. I'm not complaining. To me this was not unexpected. I'm just sharing some knowledge.

My Spyderco Ronin is my "garage knife". It sits in my Houston garage ready to be used for anything. Opening boxes, trimming plants, cutting cardboard and plastic film, etc.

Since the start of my Covid decon procedures for incoming mail and packages, it's been exposed to Lysol and Clorox.

Overtime as the summer humidity increased, the blade developed "rust" spots. Before I clean them off I thought I would share them with you.

Lession learned, wash your CTS BD1N blades with soapy water and dry them after exposue to chemicals.

It's probally the clorox. There are other covid decons that are effective and won't attack steel, such as ethanol or isopropanol >70%. They may remove lubricants. Some commercial decons have little peroxide, don't know if it'd be enough to hurt steel.

Both bleach and Lysol contain chlorinated compounds. Chlorinated compounds promote corrosion. Martensitic stainless steels (like the ones of which most blades are composed) are relatively prone to corrosion and are not recommended for use in corrosion prone environments (such as areas where bleach is used).

Plus I've been in Houston in the summer. Very humid. Probably need to wipe off your blade occasionally anyways, even without the chemicals.

On the bright side with that little rust a fingertip and some toothpaste is probably all it would take to clean it up.

After you get it clean and dry try sealing off the steel with some paste wax. If you got the corrosive stuff off that should solve your problems on a week to week basis or even longer. I have the same heat and humidity issues here to the point where just putting a fingerprint on the blade will cause it to etch in over a couple hours. The wax really helps.

It cleaned up in a few minutes work with an AG Russell "rust eraser" and some Flitz. I will consider alcohol wipes and some Ren wax.

All because of all time misleading label - stainless !
Only gold is stainless, platinum, iridium and such ...
Old steel moniker INOX is/was much more accurate.
Hard to oxidize.
Stainless steel is not stainless, rather stain LESS only.

Stainless doesn't mean chemicalsless !!! Or else.
Not really a rust - just simple chemical reactions between ...

Usually sorry for my Perfect English :^D
