Forgive me for bringing up what I am sure is an old and worn out topic.
I am looking into getting a good hard use knife and the options I am looking at come in the steels I have mentioned.
What I am looking for is corrosion info on these particular steels, ie surface vs pitting. I remember hearing or reading about A2 not developing any pitting even after significant exposure but can't find it and I have tried the search function.

Any input from makers or current users would be most appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

While I don't own any 5160 or much 1095 I won't comment on them. I do own quite a few Blackjacks using A-2. While I care for my knives (frequent cleaning, Tuff-Cloth) as one should, I have NEVER had even the slightest sign of pitting or even surface rust. I also store them in their leather sheaths (I know, bad idea) and still have not had any problems.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

I own a couple of 5160 blades. All I do is clean it after use, never oil. And it's never developed rust. A 1095 blade got a little rusty sitting in my car.

I use 1095 exclusively for my knives. If you leave a bit of water on 1095 it will start to show a light non pitting rust within 20 minutes. It's no bit deal though....Just wipe it down with oil or tuff cloth. This junk about needing a corresion resistant (stainless) knife steel is silly in my opinion. Carbon steels serve well if you give them 10seconds of care after use. They also hold a super sharp edge when heat treated correctly.
Get any of those steels you mentioned for a knife and give it a wipe down after use and you won't be sorry.

Pitting is a phenomenon ususally associated with stainless steels. The steels you have mentioned are low alloy steels, and will probably be prone to surface rusting, and not pitting. Walt

Gentlemen,

May I just say, thank you very much for your time and input. I have decided to get a Chris Reeve one piece model(Shadow IV). I will let you know my thoughts once I acquire it.

If anyone else has anymore to add, I would be most appreciative.

Thank you,

Roy
