Corrosion on my muzzle...

So the foam in my gun case disintegrated and while cleaning I noticed some troubling blueish green corrosion in the muzzle like you'd see on a sunken treasure. It's not down the barrel just inside the muzzle. The best idea I have is an oil and maybe a shotgun wire brush to see if I can just scrub it out, but I wanted to see if anyone had a better idea or a specific product to use to clean it out? Thanks in advance.

It's not an oxide of copper from the bullet ,it's probaly a mix of copper carbonate and others . Oxide of copper would be brown or red .I'm a certified seasoned citizen so I can be picky !

Just get rid of the bird cage and it will be all good. Also, buy a better case with better quality foam. I have some leather soft side cases that are 40+ years old still going strong. No reason to buy a cheap case if the gun isn't going to fall apart in a few years...

Tell me you are not storing the firearm in a foam lined case. That's no different than wrapping a firearm in a sponge and storing it. You'll likely have all sorts of trouble with corrosion if you continue the practice. Particularly bad in humidity.

I missed the foam case .That's a very bad practice .Moisture trapped inside a case can condense and cause corrosion. So you have two problems.

Foam alone usually isn't the issue. I store several thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment in custom fit foam hard side cases. No issues. I also keep a couple large desiccant packs in there too. With guns and knives, you have solvents, petroleum based products, and other chemicals that can off gas and react with some foams. Even some rubber products can react with plastics. Storage out of the case is best, but otherwise it should either be cloth padded (think moving blanket) or a very high quality case. An oil saturated rag or commercial gun cloth are also handy, wipe down the gun every time you handle it.

I recently inherited it, it's been in a safe in a non temperature regulated garage for probably a decade. It won't see foam again.

Some newer foams don't break down like that. Goo-gone and acetone (keep away from plastic) is also helpful. Good luck.

That's a nice find for sure. I hope it brings you many good memories over the years.

Be careful with the cleaners as some of them will attack the AUG's synthetic shell.

That's a different problem.Plastics ,rubber , especially foam has a weird tendency to disintergrate .You may have something for 5 years or so then in a day or two it changes . first a terrible smell then often it crumbles ! Not a chemist so I don't know why.
