Corrosion protection toxic?

Hi - I want to use the Tough Cloth or something like it to prevent corrosion and staining on my non-blacked blades.

Trouble is I often use them to cut meat, cheese or fruit when outdoors. Does anyone know if the stuff in these types of corrosion protectants is bad for us to ingest? Or of another solution to protect the blades?

Thanks.

i know that militec-1 is non-toxic after it is dried and bonded to the metal surface

Hmmmmm. I don't have alot of experience with Tuff Cloth, but I know that alot of oils and things like that are dangerous to ingest due to petrolium distillates. So, if it has them in it, I would be careful!

Hi Jeffrey,
This subject has been brought up several times before.
I believe that the general concensus is that most protectants won't harm you if used occasionally to cut food. Most people offer the suggestion of using mineral oil on your knife blade if you know that you will be outdoors cutting food. For in the house use, just wash with soap and warm water and dry immediately.

For more information use the "Search" button and you should be able to find several threads on this.

I would claim that I personally don't "know" anything about the safety of Militec-1 or Tuff-Cloth. We've heard what the companies themselves say about the product safety, but it's unclear to me what independent confirmation has been done.

As a result, I tend to err on the side of caution -- way on the side of caution. There's enough toxins in today's environment that I don't need to introduce any more to my body, if there are reasonable alternatives.

As a result: knives that will definitely be used on food get mineral oil on their blades, and nothing but. The folders may get Tuff Glide or Militec-1 on their pivots.

I would admit that I'm probably a bit overcautious, but don't mind it. The Tuff-Cloth folks have made some convincing arguments that their product is safe. I'm less up on Militec-1's safety.
