Corrosion resistance

I have a simple question which has turned out to not be so simple for me. I'm going on an extended 10-day kayak trip solely in salt water and am carrying my Pacific Salt, but I'm also carrying my NRS Pilot on my PFD. It is made of 420HC and is fairly corrosion resistant, but where I'm going there will be limited opportunity for fresh water rinsing as I have to carry all of my own fresh water. The question - is there a product that I can spray to stave off corrosion? Something like a dry lubricant gun oil, for example? Should I just take a tough cloth along and wipe down every evening? I'm not interested in any wet alternatives as the PFD was quite expensive and I'd rather not stain it with petroleum products. Its not the end of the world, but I would like to eliminate any rust issues if possible. I may buy the same knife in titanium, but I'm not sure that will fit the budget along with other gear upgrades.

I would recommend something like a Sentry Solutions Marine Tuf-Cloth. Check out their website for some information about the product.

cpio, you rock. That product sounds like it will do the trick nicely. Hopefully, someone will chime in with some practical experience with it, as it sounds perfect.

I prefer eezox and frog lube but tuf cloth should work just fine.

If you have time and the inclination, google search Ed's Red. Many years ago, the Marine Corps issued CLP for weapons cleaning. That stands for Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant. I make up a gallon or so at a time and it lasts for many moons. I don't get rust on anything but me. Yeah, I'm that old.

For 420HC most common lubricants/cleaners will work - i.e., WD40, Tri-Flow, Rem Oil, and even Mineral Oil will do the job in a pinch.

I wouldn't worry to much about 420HC corroding, assuming it was properly heat treated.
this.

hell, I'd feel perfectly comfortable with carbon steel on a salt water kayak trip. sure it would get a bit spotty, but it would remain perfectly serviceable with even a modicum of care.

I wouldn't think twice about 420hc at sea. unless you leave it inn a bucket of salt water or fish guts you'll be fine.
