Hello, I've got a question.
Since we've see that the AK-47 edge remains reletively smooth, BUT since earlier pics of the Hell Razor and Pork Belly Skinner show larger grooves, I am lead to believe that the grooves will not show up like the big grooves show in the pictures. And I right? Thanks.

I hope you're not right! I ordered mine day one and one reason was it's groovy appearance. In the pics, I believe the grooves to be too pronounced not to be visible and felt in person. I guess we'll find out.

I think te AK's grooves where just an experiment with depthness of machinery. I am sure the Razors grooves will be much deepr as in the pics. Remember, th AK's never really showed grooves in the pics even close up like the HR's do, so we should be good to go. I agree, that is one of the reasons I am buying the HR as well.

The SJ TACs, and I believe the AKs, have the corrugated bevel technology. The profile of both, from what I understand (and I have an SJ) is a beveled grind. It looks flat, but if you put a straight edge against it, it becomes very evident the entire blade is beveled. Jerry said it was done that way to enhance strength over a standard flat grind. The corrugations are very minor and only showed up in a couple of the colors. Going back and reading what Jerry said below, I guess some of the FSHs also got the ridges.

The Hell Razor and Pork Belly Skinner have more deliberate grooves cut into them. It's a different procedure.

Here's a quote from Jerry back on 10/22/05

"Killer pics! The particular FSH that you have, has a desert Tan undercoat with the olive drab overcoat. . . We did them like that for some military orders so that the tan would be exposed with wear. . . that's how they wanted them! The SJTac is the current OD that we are using.

The standard FSHs were the first Busse blades to show the ridges. . . the SJTacs are the second blades to have these ridges. They have proven to be quite the performance enhancers!!! They reduce friction when cutting and add strength to the blade. Making our knives this way is MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE!!!! The CNC machining process takes approx. 5 times as long and costs about 20 times as much in tooling. The very fine ridges that are seen in both the FSH and the SJTac are the predecessors of the much deeper and wider ridges found in the heavy corrugated bevels that will be found on the Pork Belly Skinner and the Hell Razor!

Congrats WoodHog! Killer pics!!!!

Jerry"

my Std FSH does not appear to have those ridges. Unless they are so small that they are not noticeable under the crinkle coat

My SJ TAC has some ridges, and I’m hoping that the Hell Razor will be very groovy.

the hell razor and pork belly skinner will have what is essentially a set of fullers line up back to back. the spines where the fullers meet will form a line (bevel) that tapers into the edge. the portion that is closest to the edge that doesnt have the fullers will have grooves that are like the sjtac.

at least, thats how i understand it. when you do cnc beveling, you basically have a grinding tip that runs a line across the metal, then goes down a slight amount, and cuts out another line. the end result is a grooved appearence. in surf board forming, the sand out the grooves to make a flat surface.

if you change the depth of the bit, but keep the distance between lines far apart, you end up with fullers like are seen on the hell razor.

i believe that the larger grooves will be quite noticable as compared to the smaller more shallow grooves found ont he sjtac and ak47's.

jerry or garth should answer this but i believe we are talking two totally different corrugates.

the sjt was the first to use the "micro" corrugates, followed by the AK-47.

the razor and skinner are wearing the pronounced corrugates, they are the only two so far to have this treatment.

then there is the ripperrrrr never mind....

The grooves on the Hell razor and the pork belly will be very pronounced just like the pics. The edge will remain smooth from the cutting surface and stay that way up about .300 before the grooves begin. That way even after repeat sharpening there will still be plenty of smooth edge to work with. Hope that clears it up a little for you guys.
Garth
