A recent thread about a knife line that will need to be returned for repair formed a question in my mind that I had not considered before in a production setting. In the production (custom or semi-production or factory) of one hand opening clip folders based on a single pre-fabricated design, what is more costly to produce- the handle or the blade? For the sake of argument lets use basic materials (cheap, easy to find and finish)- say 440C and aluminum or stainless for the handle, pre-bought screws both with a basic finish in a linerlock.
I do not have equipment that is good enough for folders yet, so have no experience with the labor involved. I know that with a set pattern things become more like clockwork, but I do not know how time consuming each step is, especially as the blade is a single part while the handle combines several.
In my mind the work breaks down like this-
Blade- scribe, profile, grind, ht, grind edge, finish sand
Handle- Scribe, profile, de-burr/sand, cutouts, tap, finish sand, assemble
I'm leaving out things like adjusting the lock, just looking for more understanding of the cost to produce each part individually.
Thank you to all who contribute to my question.
