Cost of Wall Repairs

I was just wondering if anyone here worked in construction or something related to give me a rough estimate of fixing a hole in the wall. I will need to replace about a 16" sqaure section of sheetrock to fix the hole. I will also attach a picture.

I really just need a rough guess of what someone would charge to do this. I will be doing the work myself, but my brother will be paying dearly for making it. I figure it is fair enough to charge him a fair going rate to fix it. That way he learns a lessson, and I get some extra knife money.

It is an older house, so the original wall is plaster. WHich means some extra work most likely to get everything all smoothed out and looking decent.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say about $20cad would fix the hole with drywall(and about 10min of work start to finish)... then the fun of blending the colour in.

Cut the hole in a nice square, fit a drywall square into the hole as closely as possible, nail an anchor stud into the wall behind square if necessary... tape, sand and paste...

should cost about 20 bucks US not including drywall. You can get the drywall from the garbage at construction sites or at the scrap section at Home Depot.

Your most expensive thing is to paint the entire wall so that you can't tell that some two bit hack who don't know which end of a hammer it takes to pound in a screw tried to fix the hole.
;)

Measure the thickness of a hunk of the old drywall as there are different thicknesses used. You can fix this for under $30.00...hiring a repair guy could run around $150.00. :)

Since you'll get a new Knife out of the deal...

:contractor voice on: That'll run your around $600. :contractor voice off:

(glad to help)
;)

Wow, that's a nasty mistake. How much vodka was involved, if you don't mind my asking?

Yeah, if you hired it done, that'd be a $600 mistake.

If you do it yourself, the biggest pain will be getting a chunk of sheetrock without having to buy a whole sheet. New housing developments typically have a dumpster for drywall scraps since they can be recycled. Look there.

The biggest pain will be matching the paint. You'll probably end up repainting the wall.

Having done this myself, you can do it too.

Cut hole square.

Hope there are some studs to anchor to under there.

Measure and cut apprpriate thickness of drywall.

Bevel all four edges of drywall pieces by sanding, sand edges of holes too.

Hold up and attach via drywall buttons and screws. (Buttons squish flat into a little pocket when tightened)

Tape seams with adhesive nylon mesh tape with 2" overlap on corners.

With a plaster knife, spread a smooth light coating of the blue top drywall paste (it sands easier). Overlap into the path and into the wall covering the tape. Let dry. Do this 2 or 3 more times until tape and seems are fully and evenly covered.

Sand gently until everything is smooth.

Repaint.

I'd charge him at least $200, maybe $300.

Well his story is, and he seems to be sticking to it, is that he fell down the stairs. Now I have NEVER heard of someone falling down the stairs and through a wall, but that is a diffferent story.

Any way I have nor problem fixing it myself. I already have it all cut out and ready for a piece of drywall to go in there. I just refinished my basement over the summer, but of course I used 1/2" Sheetrock, and that hole will ned 3/4".

As for matching the paint I will either paint the whol area now, or just wait until it gets warmer as my parents were planning to paint anyway. I'll be nice and not charge him the full $600. Maybe just $500 wil do. :D ;)

I think the biggest problem is going to be the plaster could well absorb the paint differently than the drywall, and you'd be looking at a big square in the middle of your wall slightly off color. Prime it well before you paint.

Ah, I am not that worried bout matching the paint well. The whole house is getting painted this summer when I finish with school in May. Just patching the whole and having some sort of similiar color is cool for now.

My main interest is charging my bro for my time ;) . Wouldn't want to lose precious knife money, especially with a DDR custom coming home sometime early next year. :D

just bock out the piece and use 1/2 inch drywall the tape will secure it and blend out the seams farther than you think... as far as charging your brother- remember if you EVER need his services YOU will pay a hefty price...

Erik-
Is the wall plaster over sheetrock, or plaster over plaster lath? This makes a big difference in the repair methods-My last two houses had regular plaster lath walls, and if you want to keep the original wall, it is way more complicated than putting in a sheetrock square and floating it.

BTW, is your brother 500 pounds or something? 'accidentally' making a hole that big is difficult... :D

It is plaster over sheetrock. I am basically repairing it the same way. I am just about done getting the thing patched up too. Once it is painted you will never be able to tell.

He is actually barely over 100 pounds. I also find it really hard to believe that it was an accident. I mean I have never heard of anything like that happening before. It sure is hard to make a hole that big without trying.
