A fellow by the name of Flatlander88 told me that you could use the outer bark from large cottonwood trees as a bowdrill hearth. This was a new one for me and I had to try it out. Works great and because large trees are often shedding their bark at the base, this is an easy gathered material for your bowdrill hearth.
