I'm tring to decide between two knives. I like a tanto blade. I also like partially serrated. So the two I like are.

1) CRKT M-16

2) Cold Steel Recon-1
Any thoghts on these?

I'm not a fan of either knives. I've heard of issues with both. However, there are people who enjoy those models as well. I would suggest the following instead:

Benchmade 553 (Griptilian Tanto). About $10-$15 more than the knives you're considering, OR

Kershaw Tanto Blur. Around the same price as the two models you're considering.

Both have the option to choose with a combo edge since you prefer that type.

I'm not a big fan of either model either, however I do own an M16-14T. It is a decent knife, and built like a tank, just not my cup of tea. If I were to get an M16, that's the one that I would get. But, before I got that, I'd get the Kershaw Blur already mentioned.

Well, I have decided that much of the debate regarding knives is like a Ford/Chevy argument in a lot of ways. But, I really like the Blur's handle. It is comfortable in the hand, sized right, and the 'grippy material', whatever it is, does a great job in sweaty hands. The opening mechanism is very authoritative, lockup is great (as it is on every Kershaw I have ever owned/handled) and the company cannot be beat. The Blur I own is in 440A steel, which isn't great, but it performs well enough and I don't mind touching it up; however, you can get one in s30v which is a great performer.

Thanks for the response. I'm just trying to get a handle on this (no pun intended) I'm no knife expert. I know Kershaw's name. They have very good stuff.

Understand also that the Recon is a 9.33 inch knife, while the CRKT m16 tanto is 7.125 inches long (depending on model as well, and depending on what handle material and blade steel you want). Some CRKT m16s are 9 inches also.

I have handled a Recon and it is HUGE. Definitely not something I'd bother carrying around with me. Like aforementioned, the Benchmades and the Kershaw Blur are all very nice knifes (And from what I could tell, built better than the Recon).

The EDC, M-16 10. Aluminum scales, Aus8 blade.

I have that one and the M 16 14M. The M16 10 is not a bad knife , but I think it's overpriced for what it is. It's a small version of the regular M16 series. I picked one up on sale or $25, but I wouldn't pay more than that ..... and I see them all the time for $35-$45.

In that size and price range the Kershaw Tactical Blur ( tanto) is a better knife. If you want a bigger knife at a great price , check out the kershaw Storm II. It's not a tanto , but it's a bargain. WallMart should have both Kershaw knives.

Both are decent knives for starting out. I actually bought both a Recon 1 Tanto and an M16 Tanto when I first got into knives. They are way out classed by the stuff i own today, and I suspect you will own much nicer knives a year from now as well.
