Could a custom knife be made with an AXIS lock?

As a one off for your own collection? Probably. But if you tried to sell it, Benchmade would most likely get mad.

Yes, actually the Russian custom maker Shirogorov uses the axis lock (and pays BM for it) in some of his folders which IMO are quite nice looking though hard to find/ get a hold of in the U.S.

The short answer is yes.

The longer answer, as Grease said, is that there are copyright infringement problems if you sell what you make.

Keyman, and one or two others, are making their own scales for Benchmade knives. If this is something you want to do, I would start by contacting him.

That's what I am looking for. I should have rephrased my question "Is there someone who can make me a custom knife with the AXIS lock?".

That would probably be part of my ideal edc knife.

I thought Shirogorov held the patent for the Axis lock in Russia. I know Russian patent law is significantly difderent from patent law in the U.S. but I'm not 100% clear on the differences. Honestly, it seems like Benchmade is very protective of their patents, and I'd be surprised if they had let someone use it for a fee.

The only reason I bring it up is that I suspect you'll have to go through the maker to get an Axis lock model. Again, I'm not 100% sure, but I think if a North American dealer started to sell Shirogorov's Axis lock models that Benchmade could file suit.

Uhm I've read in more than one place it is a licensed use of the Axis lock, meaning the maker is paying his dues.
