Could I take a look at that old knife?

Has anyone ever found a Busse at a garage sale or some sort of thrift market? How fun would that be, trying to keep your cool looking at some "old knife"......a fellow can dream.

Keep dreaming David, especially in Au...
Had a wander through 2 'antique' shops not too far from Sydney on Saturday, and aside from silverware the thing that looked the closest to knife (in function) was an old rusty saw... ok, I've seen a few chisels too...

Wore my Busse tee shirt to a gun show in Birmingham once. Old guy at a table commented, "I have one of those, thinking about selling it." He didn't have it with him, but he described a very early straight-handled Steel Heart in unused condition. I asked what he wanted for it, and he seemed to have no idea of it's value. Now if he had quoted a low price I would have taken it because he would have been happy and so would I. But darn it, he asked "what would it be worth today?" I am not going to knowingly lie to anyone about anything, so I answered him honestly and he was shocked. This was back several years ago when they were routinely selling in the $1000 to 1200 range. I told him I would not personally pay that because I already had one, but told him I would pay $500 if he wanted to unload it without any hassle. He declined though, so I referred him to Blade Forums as a good place to sell it.
I don't know if he ever did, though.

I have found several at gun shows, Culti's, Gladius, Gamewarden, Active Duty and an older diagonal groove handle SH. All were in brand new condition too. I swear time stopped when I held the Gladius with both hands

Finding a Busse at a garage sale or thrift shop would certainly make for an interesting story, that's for sure!

It seems to happen more in the Ohio area.

It has happened, and been posted here, more than once.

Also, there are occasionally crazy deals to be found here and there.

This is one reason that people need to let their families know what their collections are worth, or where to go to get current values.

A while ago, a guy sold some original straight handles on Ebay for their original sticker prices. Several of us here contacted him to tell him to pull the auctions, and do some research before resisting them.

One straight handle beauty sold for something like 250-300 or so. It just went under the radar before any of us noticed and gave him a heads up.

My wife and mother-in-law both are aware of Busses, so they always look for them whenever they visit shops.:D:thumbup:

I found about forty just last night at a garage sale right next door. No wait, that was a dream....:p

I got my Stealth Hawk at a pawn shop. They had no idea, then again I knew it looked familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Once upon a time I bought a SHBM with a swedge that was thinner than later models. I didn't notice until a long time later, and by then I had long forgotten who sold it to me.

I bought a SJTAC MO, RMdeux, RMD, and an ESEE 4 off craigslist from a lady selling her husbands blades. She said he needed a new dirt bike. He knew what he had but wanted to sell them quick. Got a decent deal.

I have heard many stories of people picking up Old School Busse's at garage sales in Ohio. Jerry used to do a lot of shows when he was starting out. I am sure that there are a few guys out there that bought blades from Jerry before anyone knew who he was. I am just hoping that I can be the guy to help them out with taking them off their hands. ;) I actually ran in to one of these guys a few years back. He had a few blades that he was looking to sell. I could have gotten those blades for a steal but told him to do some research before he sold them. I didn't want him to get ripped off. Trust me he had some pieces that were worth a heck of a lot more than what he was asking. I hope he took my advise.

Never seen a bussekin that belonged to someone else around here, garage sale or no.

Except those that I have given to friends and family, that is.

I went looking for those today at one gun/knife show, and cruised the neighborhoods for estate/garage sales. No luck - just tables full of fancy looking blades for under $20. The hunt continues...Cheers.

I always stop at pawn shops and thrift stores just looking, but nope. I have found a couple of spyderco's.

I found a Basic 7 in a gun shop for $70. I bought it because I liked the way it felt and bit the bullet on buying it thinking "You're paying too much for this knife but you really, really like it." Then I found out about Busse's when I went to find out what it was here.

Then I found out from here looking around trying to learn about Busse's that about a month before I had seen one of the "straight handles"at a pawn shop for $50. The next day I went back and, as expected, it was gone. Now, I'm looking all the time.

My best buy was at a gun shop, a SHBA cord wrapped for $175.00

Then I spent more money on it at the Spa

Hmmm i have had this exact dream repeatedly but i always wake up before i get to buy any  .... i need to work on my dreaming:D

I was at Knob Creek a few years ago with a friend from the forums, I will let him remain unknown at this point. I was at our table setting stuff up and he decided to use the restroom before the show started. He was gone a few minutes and then came sprinting back to the table yelling, "Give me my bag". Wasn't sure what was going on so I tossed him his bag and he sprinted away again. He came back a few minutes later holding an original unused SH1 that he had just paid less than $250 for. Still jealous of that find.
