Kathy is off for another year of first grade at the Episcopal school where she teaches. Before school is out next spring she will be seventy.

Two years ago was her "last year." Last year was her "absolutely last year." This year she is adamant that she will retire next spring. Her reason (excuse?) is that her headmistress has asked her to stay and help her get through re-acreditation. She has always said that when Una (the headmistress) goes, she will go also, and Una is retiring as well, so Kathy may really mean it this time. She is one of those rare, lucky people who is doing exactly what she was meant to do. Parents at this big-ticket day school clamor to get their kids in her class. Kimberly has been seeing a dermatologist for years who refues to charge us, because the woman insists that she owes Kathy so much for what she did for her son. Kathy considers her specialty to be to infuse first-graders with an excitement about reading and a love of books, and she is very good at it.

It has been my privilege to be with this remarkable woman for 41 years. Now we will see if she can endure going from life with a room full of six year olds to constantly being around me. If she can handle the decline in maturity level, we might just make it.:D

I wish you and Kathy the best of luck! It sounds like she makes a big difference in all the children's lives.

A good woman is hard to find. To tell you the truth I am not sure why any of them put up with us at all.

I call Mrs Andy the Poison Pixie....I work hard to stay on her "good side" ..her bosses are aften "scared of her" as are most people who work around her. That said she gets shyte done... and done well.... steps on lots of toes and is not who you would want in your "public relations" department but most all have discovered that once you are past the shell is is very caring and goes out of her way to support her boss and the staff who work for her. I am the most immature person she ever has to deal with.... this of a 17 year old pretending to be 43... ;) I am thankful of her patience... I know my place though (why it works I guess) ...if something heavy needs lifting or something needs killing I am the first person she thinks of.

When people are doing something they love and are good at (as Kathy clearly is :) :) ) is is really hard to let go, especially in a field like teaching where the rewards for a good teacher are really just so great...!!! I wish her all the best, even if there is "just one more year" she needs to do... :D

My pops retired after more than 3 decades at the same job (Athletic Director and VP at a small Community College). After a little while, he started driving small loads on short runs (just a 5th wheel on a Diesel pick up truck), just to keep him self busy.

I believe he enjoys the "man time" away from my mom. Apparently it is necessary to keep him sane.
