No, this isn't one of those hypothetical threads that we've all seen so many of and no one ever gets down to whatever the number is.

Due to multiple hospitalizations, surgeries and then unemployment to cap it all off, I had to make exactly that choice.

Over the years, I guess I've owned better than 35 Busse blades and as the collection evolved it was mostly Straight Handles. Still my favorites of all the designs over the years.

So, what did I keep? What were the 2 Busse's that had the greatest function and form in my eyes?

Straight Handled Badger Attack in INFI with a .25" blade. I had had 7 or 8 of these puppies, mostly fatties in A2. The skinniest one that I kept was the best slicer of all, if not the most comfortable in the grip.

Custom Shop Active Duty with the (IIRC), .14" thick blade and a double cut finish. Most were satin as I've only seen 1 or 2 double cuts over the years. This was from the first run of AD's way back when. It is by far the best slicer of any Bussekin knife I ever owned.

Just about all of my Swamp Rat knives had to go also, but I was able to hang on to my first 'real' knife, the Howling Rat that I bought in 2001 or 2002 soon after SRKW first started. Also kept the Camp Tramp and Battle Rat purchased right after the Howler. The only 'newer' Rat I managed to hold on to was the HRLM, which I think is a superior design to the original.

Only 1 Scrap Yard, but it is the most used knife in the house. That would be the ScrapMuk. Sorry Jerry, I just couldn't wait for the Busse version, although looking at the threads, it is still eagerly awaited. My wife claimed it and it is in constant use in the kitchen. We both love the shape of the blade for so many uses and only my vegetable cleaver comes close for amount of use. I had traded a butt ugly green Skeleton Key for it and I think I got the best of that deal.

Well, those are my 2. A lot of thought went into those, especially when I had to start letting 'to the grave' blades go. Both have been EDC's and will be again when I heal enough to wear a belt. Being able to actually carry them on a daily basis meant a lot.

Hope no one else has to make this kind of decision other than in the hypothetical threads.

Rob

Very interesting and informative choices.

Hang in there and glad you are well enough to be here still.

Good pair to keep. I got to try out a fatty straight handle badger attack in A2 and it was a real nice feeling blade. Thin AD's are super nice. My BAD sure is a slicer.

Tough letting any go. I am only at 5, and have owned about 10 models, but never more than 5 at a time.

Hey Rob,
Long time no see! Good to see your still kicking around, and I hope you heal 100% Sorry to hear of your woes though. :(

I'm going through a similar situation right now, to a slightly lesser extent. The hardest part is going through them trying to figure what to keep and let go of, the memories really come forward on some. I still have the two Badgers I got from you, A2 fatty and the E handle. The fatty will be with me, the E handle may have to go and its tearing me up.

Anyhow, its good to hear from you again, theres not many from the old days still around.

Hey Dog,

I am feeling your pain.

My family has goner thorough that kind of trouble in the last 10 years, and there have been several times when I had to sell everything that had any value, that folks would buy.

There is no cliche that helps take away the feeling of lost prized possessions.

Would it be ok if I tell a story?

A short one anyway...

From the time I was in my teen's until now, I have wished to hunt in Africa.

My step-Dad put the bug in me and it has never left me.

Well several years ago I found my perfect Africa rifle...a Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in 375 H&H. This was a couple years before Winchester closed up.

I was one happy kid. I could barely afford to shoot it at about $1.50 a round...(Now it's like $5.00 bucks per...)

But the time came when it had to go...and I was afraid and worried that I was kissing a dream good-bye.

Then my wife told me this,"Hon, when we get the money for a trip to Africa, we will buy a new rifle for you."

We both are still working for that trip.

Maybe it will help you to know that there are guys out there, (like me) who don't even have one BUSSE knife. So you are 2 ahead of me.

God bless. Remember to hug your wife, who is probably handier than a 27 blade Swiss Army knife and is always there for a hug when you need it most.

Life is good. God is Great.

I hope you recover and find a good job. I'm sure its hard letting go of some nice knives but they are material things after all and they can be replaced in time.

Rob,
I got some stuff from you awhile back when life was taking an unexpected turn for you then. I'm sorry to hear that it keeps coming up with not-so-welcome surprises. I do wonder about you from time to time, as I do some of the other old-time HOGs who have not been around much. I guess life catches up to even the fastest of HOGs eventually. Still, I'm glad to see you're still around, and equally glad that you still have a few of the Busse offerings that have brought you tons of joy. I hope things get better on all fronts. :)

Rob, I hope things get better quickly for you.

I think you made good choices with the blades. Although I've never owned one, I did get a chance to handle and use a SHBA for a while a few years back (thanks, Mulder ). It would definitely be one to hang on to, especially in INFI. That AD also sounds a lot like one I've got, a 2007 SE. It's DC and somewhere in the mid-teens in thickness. One of my favorite users, for sure.

Also some great choices on the other blades. They're all winners.

Stay strong.

Rob,
Sorry to hear of your troubles and hope things improve. I only have 2 Busse's and 2 SwampRats. Each one represents a sacrafice of property or debt to have them however, makes me appreciate them more. I really think the 4 Busse/kin I have can handle any task I might need them for. I have always tried not to sell anything I like and/or could not replace, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. I hope you are able to get back whatever was near and dear to you.

The original Custom Shop Active Duty - great choice!
IMO, the best Busse knife ever made.

Original Badger Attack isn't bad, either.

Good on you Bro! Sorry to hear about the issues, but I empathize. I have had a few chunks of Busse/kin goodness myself. I (my wife actually claims it) too have my very first Swamp Rat Howler. The only reason I have the BATAC and CGFBM I do is because of the generosity of an Uber Hog friend here on BF and there was a GW as well, but it went to an INFIless friend. I do have a BOSS Jack LE coming out of a trade for shop credit, but all others have gone to paying medical and mechanic bills.
I hope all is well now, my issues continue but I will have my INFI since I don't sell gifts or loans.

Hi Guys!

Dwayne, Chris, Mike, good to hear from you all and everyone else.

LOL, Yeah, Chris remembers when things started going sideways.;) I think one of my 'keeper' SHSH's headed that way. Anyway, it was just one thing after another and all from different directions. Let's see. First, the news the company was re locating to SC in late 2006, my Mom died early 2007, house fire 2 days before my Moms funeral, heart attack with stent installed a week before the move, moved to SC after recovery, house fire in new house, another stent had to be installed, surgery for a colon blockage, colostomy, prostate cancer, prostate removed. Recovered, got laid off. All this within less than 2 years.:D

Been ducking and hiding. LOL

Finally, 2 Doctors told me to apply for disability. I did and got it. The house I have is paid for (the one smart thing I've done in my life), so the disability is enough to skate, with just utilities and food to cover.

So, anyway, things for the moment are quiet and I'm starting to poke my head out of the hole a bit.:) Still have a good bit of that 'what next' going on though.

Glad I didn't have to decide between the AD and the SHBA. I agree with Mike about the AD, but also have the same feelings about the SHBA. Well, I actually have a more emotional attachment to the SHBA. It just feels and looks so right. The AD is more functional though.

Of all the others, I miss the SHSH's the most. They are just so beautiful in form and feel.

Now, just to get myself back to where I can afford another Busse!!!

No kidding with the "What Next" comment, holy crap!

I think I'd hide in the bedroom and have my food slid under the door!

No doubt! Talk about getting perspective on your own problems. I'm feeling pretty good about things now.

I do hope all goes well. Prayers outbound.
