Could/should it be called a custom

I just got into the knife/tactical scene not to long ago so forgive my ignorance. I bought a production Emerson waved CQC7B with a BT blade and no serrations about a month ago and have had some work done to it by my Buddy who makes axes, hatchets and throwing knives. He has taken off the BT coating, reground the blade to a "zero grind",polished the flats of the blade and satin finished the grind and the gind on the other back of the blade. He also put on Ti bolsters and Carbon fiber handle slabs and Polished the pocket clip. All and all it's turned out very very well. My question is can or should it be considered a "custom Emerson" even though Mr. Emerson didn't do the work?

I'm also considering anodizing the liners, probably Blue or Green. I would like to take on this project by myself if possible. Would anyone care to go into detail on how to anodize Ti?

What you have is a "Customized Production Knife".

I'll choose a maker at random. Let's say you have Kevin Robinson take a production "CQC7B BT", have him strip the Black-T off, Satin finish the blade, add Ti scales, add Green Canvas Micarta scales, polish and beadblast the liners. You get a great looking knife. But it is not a custom Emerson, nor is it a custom Robinson. It's a "Customized Production Knife". If Ernie makes you a knife with his own two hands, you have a custom Emerson. If Kevin builds you a knife with his own two hands, you have a custom Robinson (and I feel obligated to mention that Kevin makes an AWESOME custom folder).

There are:
  • * "Custom Emerson Knives"
    * "Production Knives"
    * "Custom/Production Knives" - made with machine made, ala carte parts. (You can have bolsters, Damascus blades, Ti bolsters, Pearl scales, ect built onto a production knife directly from EKI)
    * "Customized Production Knives" - Production knives customized by a third party (and there are some awesome ones out there)

One could also argue another category. "Pre Production Prototypes". These are usually knives that the blades have been hand ground by Ernest Emerson, but production parts are used to make the completed knife. As an example, I had Ernie look over my PPP Commander at the Guild show this year. The blade is hand ground by him. The liners are hand profiled and fitted by him, but the scales are machine done (and had to actually be fitted to the liner on one side. Is this a "Custom Knife"? Not truly 100% . . . but it's close enough in my book.

I go with John on this, you have a customised production knife. After saying that do you have any pictures?

Regards,

Ed

Sadly I'm not exactly "computer savvy" and if I had a digital camera it would porbably be outdated before I got it to work for me. Any suggestions on how to anodize my liners?

Oh, MAN! Here we go again! "Saphire" if that IS you, it takes some nads to use the name "Usual Suspect" as a handle.

Looks like he changed his username (once again) to evade the flak he's been getting. He should have changed it to "Usually Suspect"!!!

BTW, "Iced", with your reputation here on the forums, I highly doubt anyone here would buy anything from you. Besides, I believe with your level of membership, you are not authorized to sell on BFC (let alone on the Emerson forums).

I was gonna just let it go at that, but I can't.

The term Usual Suspect was coined, and adopted, by members here who have helped keep this forum alive. They have shown loyalty not only to EKI and Ernie himself but to each other. Yeah it's two words but those two words have meaning to most of us. That "meaning" is earned through time and kinship.

It is not for you to take as your own. Especially after admitting you just got on to the tactical knife scene a couple months ago?!?!?

Then on top of that you come in here and call one of US a "dickhead"!

If anyone has earned the right to be called "THE" Usual Suspect I can think of only two in the group who has rightfully earned that title: John Hollister and Eric Blair for their efforts toward the other Suspects. There are others that come in real close but these two have shown their loyalty and support above and beyond what any of us have and if anyone deserves it they do.

Now if you want to come into the group and be welcomed with open arms. Do it like the rest of us have. EARN IT! You can't just take a title and then begin to degrade one of us and think that's gonna give you and "IN" with us, do you?

And if this is you Iced (assed) you're really starting to get on my nerves

TheUsualSuspect:

Normally I would not chime in when it comes to newer members offering their opinions on this Forum, but in this case I will.

As far as the Moniker Usual Suspect goes, those individuals who have frequented and contributed to this forum only after some time refer to themselves as "Suspects ". I myself still do not consider myself worthy of carrying said 'Title' although I do love my Emersons and try to contribute to this Foum in a constructive manner.

By coming on board and assuming that Moniker, which is held in esteem by the individuals herein...then to go on to insult one of the more colorful and senior participants-

BAD TASTE!

i'll give my opinion, even though i could scarcely be called a suspect...

if ur gonna call urself a usual suspect after being on the tactical knife scene for "not too long" and owning one emerson, whatever, some of the guys on this forum will let it go through one ear and sh-t out the other...but then u diss one of the good guys here.....you're telling HIM to get a life? please. :barf:

I guess it is time to deny admittance once again to an obvious choice. I hate to say it,but this is gone far enough.Big Wave Dave OUT

"Dickhead"? "Get a life"? This from a CHILD who has to invent pathetic lies in order to pretend to be an adult? Piss off, little boy. We don't have the time or patience for you here. Go play in a sandbox somewhere.

Ross, Ray, BM, Dave - thanks for watching my back with this. The hell with the kid - he isn't worth our time or attention. "F" him.

Actually Chris, I was watching Ross. That wasn't your back he was watching when he was standing behind you!

LOL! :p

Ray, of course I was watching Chris's back. Have you seen his front!!! I mean come on!!! I'm a glutton for punishment but that's just down right sadistic for me to force myself to look at those ugly utters anymore than I have too:eek: :)

Hey and Ray, what the heck are you doing watching me so closely.....hmmmm!?!?!?!?
