I have a Trailmaster in San Mai III and have been trying for some time now to find out what steels are used in its construction. If someone has the answer, please be more specific than "high carbon core, lower carbon sides".

Thank you!

What are the advantages of San Mai III over conventional steel?

How does it compare to the Carbon V version?

Laninating steels like that lets you blend opposing properties together. Slapping those 420j2 sides on the AUS-8 makes the blade stronger than a plain aus-8 blade. A harder steel will be more brittle but putting lower carbon steel (or iron for that matter) on the sides gives it support. I would like to see the center be Carbon V and the outsides 420-j2: Now that would be a San Mai trail MASTA!!!!
